Part of the rear of the cigarette lighter is a built in fuse which blows when shorted. Fix is a new cigarette lighter are a lil soldier acrodd the terminals. Be carefull not to use the earth one though.
The lighter socket will have to be removed with the panel. The centre console is nearlly all clips with only a couple of screws. To discribe in full would take hrs on a pc, without the car infront. but only a few minutes to perform. use some thing plastic rather than a screw driver to " pry " out the panels. ( Gently )
once the panel has been removed if you look at the back of the lighter, you will see were a wire used to be. between two terminals. I have used just a short piece of wire to replace the fuse and soldierd it in place. The lighter is still protected by the main fuse but would recommend placing a 10amp fuse close to the socket were you can if required get to it. Care should be used when inserting the phone charger to make sure that the earths on the side of the pin are not in line with the power legs in the cigerette lighter socket.
Alternative is if you do not smoke and will never use this as a lighter.. change it to a power socket perchased from local car parts shop. They are different!
