Adjust air fuel mixture

Not sure which or where the screw that adjusts the air fuel mixture on my 1987 dodge dakota's TBI (throttle body injection) or is the only way i can change it is by re-jetting the throttle body?

There is a set screw in the front of the throttle body, to adjust it, but first why do you need to adjust it ? if low idle then it could be your TPS or IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE, this valve is on the back of the TB and should be cleaned first, take the two.screws out which are torx heads and I think.a 25, once you have it out, take TB cleaner and a non lint towel and spray and clean, also clean the port where it sits in to, on these Dodges they are known for these to be carboned up, this would give low or high idle, also check to see if you have your 5volt reference on this sense, the TPS and crank sense, this one is hard to get to, it sits on top of your transmission bell housing on pass side. before you go touching the.idle set screw, check these and clean.idle air control valve first

It's not that I need to adjust it It's that I want to plus when I floor the peddle sometime it bogs like its getting too much fuel and then recovers so I want to lean the mixture out a smig for added horse power and to eliminate the bog but I'll try cleaning the jets first

  • Midnite12 Dec 07, 2013

that is the way they made it, there is a rev limiter on it, almost all cars and trucks have it, you are not going to gain hp by turning it, there's other ways to do this, you can get bigger jets, add a spacer on your TB , the reason why it bogs when you try.to.floor it,.it's more of.a.safety feature, so you.don't blow your.engine, like when you press.the gas pedal all the.way to the.floor when.trying to.start it cuts.the.fuel off, get a K&N cold.air intake system will boost HP to, once you start messing with.the.set screw you will throw off your fuel trim , it's better not to.touch it and buy some. performance parts that will do the job.right

The only limiters should be mechanical though so I wouldnt be removing anything digital, It's an 87 plus I was hoping I'd be able to get away with having to buy parts

  • Midnite12 Dec 07, 2013

no, its electronic, better off getting a ignition kit tuner, crane has a good one for a good price, you know that the rev limiter only works in park and neutral, not in gear, so don't know why you want to raise the rpm ? your not.going to.gain.any hp or torque by messing with it, since.it's a 87, you really don't have much in computers, so switching to a carb would help out, the rev limiter is there really so you don't blow your engine, again.there are other things.that can be done that don't cost much to get better hp.and torque out of it.

ah ok I've heard that the tb's on the v8's will bolt right in. do you know if just the jet's can be swapped or not?

  • Midnite12 Dec 10, 2013

they should be able to just replace them, I never really had to, but I know a couple of guys that did change them, but really didn't ask if it was stock or not

SOURCE: idle adjustment for a 1995 2.5 liter fuel injected

Idle is controlled by an idle air control valve and the throttle position sensor-that setting you are referring to is set at the factory, the ECM will override any changes you make. You should clean thoroughly the throttle body and the PCV valve ,check for any vacuum leaks, and possibly remove the Idle air control and clean it, being careful NOT to get the top half wet with cleaner (electronics).

SOURCE: How to Adjust idle RPM for a 2003 honda accord. some people were talking about a screw on the throttle body. but I can't find that screw. How do you go with adjusting this and where to find it ?

First, you shouldn't adjust the idle. If the idle isn't correct, that means there is an issue somewhere - not that the idle needs to be adjusted.

There isn't an adjustment screw. To adjust the idle, you will need to move the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) forwards or backward. To do this, you will need to remove the tamper proof bolt and replace it with one that can be loosened and tightened.

SOURCE: I don't know where the air/fuel mixture screw is on my carb

There should be one screw (I'm assuming it's the Carter YF carburetor 1 barrel) that's by itself away from linkages etc, more to center at base of carb where it meets manifold, that is angled approx 45 degrees going in to base. That should be your mixture screw. What symptoms are you experiencing anyway?

SOURCE: 95 nissan sentra 1.6L, air

1.5 turns for most carbs, but you can use a vacuum gage on the intake to get it right. Make sure engine is warm and on the regular idle screw, then turn the mixture screw in and then turn out until vacuum stops rising. OK?

Where is the idle positioning sensor located on my 94 chevy 1500

there is no idle position sensor, there is an iac, idle air control stepper motor that is located on the tbi, throttle body injection unit, there is a tps on the tbi as well, throttle positioning sensor, so if you are looking for an idle adjustment it is not possible to just turn a screw, first you should check for vacuum leaks,a vacuum leak will cause the idle to go up,the block learn will also be up past 128,use a smoke machine and smoke the engine to help detect a vacuum leak first,no leaks found then reset the throttle body set screw to zero, clean the tbi with a good carb cleaner and a little brush,no biding, check tps for correct value, from 0.6 to 0.8 volts at close throttle and up to 4.8 volts at wide open with no voltage drop or glitches, make sure the pcv valve is working properly,if you have idle quality problems make sure all is good, hoses, cap rotor wires plugs, leaking valve seals can contaminate the air intake and play a role in extreme cases. check plugs for a build up of carbon which indicates this. good luck

How do you adjust idle on toyota 3.4 v6

If the vehicle is fuel injected, its not adjustable, and is computer managed.

If the vehicle is equipped with carb, then adjust the screw on the throttle body, until it runs right.

I'm having a problem. I have an 84 mustang gt

The 1984 model could be throttle body injected or a regular 4 barrel carb. The GT model is supposed to have a carb.
CFI is central fuel injection which is like TBI. The throttle body has two injectors mounted in the center, one for each bank.
If it has a carb you may have some adjustments you can make. If it is fuel injected you don't. The computer monitors the engine temp and exhaust gas to regulate fuel mixture.

Idle at 250 rpm

Idle Speed Control (ISC) Motor OPERATION Eagle Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) System NOTE: The Eagle TBI system is used only on 2.5L Premier engines. The Idle Speed Control (ISC) motor is mounted to the throttle body and controlled by the PCM. The throttle lever rests against the initial adjustment screw of the actuator (plunger). The idle speed is not adjustable. The initial adjustment screw is only used to establish the initial positioning of the actuator when the ISC motor has been replaced. The actuator extends or retracts to control engine idle speed and to set throttle stop angle during deceleration. Based on inputs from the various engine control system sensors and switches to the PCM supplies current to the ISC motor to adjust the actuator position for the particular operating conditions.

I have a 1987 gmc jimmy with a 5.7 litre fuel injection and it seems to be lack air or has to much i dnt know . and i want to know how to adjust my fuel air mixture

Unfortunately, most fuel injection engines don't have an adjustable fuel/air mixture by the technician.

The fuel/air mixture is controlled by a computer.

adjusted some of the carbs are preset some you can force and some don't have an adjusting screw for the jets if the carb is in good working order but needs a bit more fuel you u must adjust the float for more or less fuel check to make sure the float valve is clean free and not sticking ..

Has anyone tried adjusting the fuel air mixture?

Based on what I am reading this is a gas engine and I am also assuming it is fuel injected. (Or does it have throttle body fuel injection?)

I suspect a case of dirty fuel injectors at the moment. They will need to be removed and cleaned.

If you have throttle body fuel injection then you will need the fuel air mixture adjusted.

If you respond can you let us know the "engine size" that is installed please. It would help us to help you in troubleshooting.

Thanks for using Fixya. Kelly.

Fuel pump location on 87 Dodge Dakota 3.9 V-6

Should be throttle body injected,if so in the gas tank. If it's carburated it's on the passenger side of the engine about mid-way down the front on the block, under the alternator.

Engine wont idle on my vitara jlx 1993

Check your air idle control valve, check for the wires to be fretted or broke, and also check the vacuum lines to it.
The air idle control valve mey be dirty and a good cleaning with throttle body clean through the throttle body may help clean the carbon build up.
If there is a Auto Zone, have the Vitara scanned for a DTC code.
Here is a few things you can do.
Checking  the IAC (it's called the ISC on Single Point TBI)
It is screwed to the throttle body, and has a 2 pin electrical connector) with an Ohmmeter - the solenoid should be 11 to 14 ohm.  If not, replace.

To test the IAC / ISC
Use a Duty Meter, and adjust the air adjust screw to get 50%.  If the revs are not right at that point, adjust some more to try to get them correct, but if the duty goes below 28%, a vacuum leak is highly likely.

Air Adjust screw for TBI / Single point   look on the Throttle Body, just below the fuel line and maybe an inch to the left of the Fuel Pressure Regulator - it looks like a cross head screw into the TB.

The 8v (Single Point / TBI) uses a throttle opener device to open the throttle extra during starting.  When the engine starts to run, a vacuum line is applied to the device through a vacuum servo valve, controlled by the ECM. The vacuum closes the throttle opener, to bring the revs down to normal.  The ECM will operate the VSV after about 10 sec from engine start (less if the coolant is warm).

Try these things for now and keep me posted. good luck.
