Tune it up and replace fuel filter.

pull off the transmission transition switch wire pluged on to tranny
start car drive should be fine never hook op again 0 money
or pay 700 dollars to install a new one
or buy switch pull tranny and install your self

take your distribuitor cap off and dry the inside out

the engine tickover is too slow when the engine is cold its running on cold start, ie:choke,, after it warms up the engine slows down this is what is causing it to stall in gear,, get some one to hold the brakes hard on and with the engine running in gear ajust the tick over till its reving at 750 - 850 rpm the revs will go up a bit when its out of gear,, before you pick a gear to go into push the foot brake down to stop the car lurching,,,

check ur idle air control valve if clogged will not start car this affects emmissions,stalling,hesitation etc.. its located on throttle .has a hose and a couple of plugs or check ur purge valve its on ur throttle also has 3 hoses hooled to it controls vacuum

tell your mechanic to look up Service Bulletin #96-032 this could fix your problems

The problem is the torque converter solenoid. I had it happen on my 94 Cavalier a few years back and was a cheap fix at the local car mechanic. What happens is the transmission warms up and hits a certain speed where the solenoid engages, but then it sticks and won't disengage until it cools down sufficiently. When it sticks, it causes the car to shake when slowing down and will snub out the engine if you come to a stop.

Change the IAC the idle air control. You may be able to clean it and put it back on.
