1985 F-250 with the 300CI 4.9L it starts and idles ok, but runs rough when given the slightest to full throttle. it has intermittent moments of power, that feel like the truck should run, but only last a couple seconds. ive changed fuel pump, filter, cap and rotor, and plugs. has anyone else had this happen?

Just a thought: the ignition module on the distributor (called a TFI -thick film integrated-whatever that means-module) but it is the ignition module. Swap in a used one and see if it works.

Or is the advance working on the timing? Is it vacuum advance or computer controlled? Vacuum advance will have a small housing on the dist. with a vacuum hose attached. A ported signal from the carburetor should provide vacuum advance. Ported means it only has a vacuum when the throttle is raised off idle. And then there are centrifugal weights inside the dist. that provide centrifugal advance-when engine is revved, the weights cause the timing to advance a slight amount. Vacuum advance is a greater degree of advancing the timing. Best way to check if your advance is working is to put a timing light on it. While at it, check if your base timing is correct. I don't know the specs for your engine. Check a repair manual, or ask at maybe, autozone.
The little weights in the bottom of the distributor housing are attached to tiny springs that move a plate to advance timing. Over time, age attacks the effectiveness of all that stuff-caked dirt and oil and all kinds of rusts, you know. The springs can rust and break. The only way to get to them is usually to take the distributor out and disassemble the whole thing. That's why you should use a timing light to check timing and advance properties. Getting the computer to control timing and spark advance was a big improvement in vehicle design. It means a lot less little mechanical things that always wear out.
Other things you might check are the egr valve and the pcv valve.

SOURCE: 1989 ford stalls when idling ,runs rough at idle

Check for any trouble codes in the engine computer, and have the fuel pressure tested. If it is throttle body injection. observe the spray pattern of the injector when it pulses. You should see a cone pattern of the fuel spraying down into the intake. If it drips, or appears anemic, the injector might be partially clogged. Try some injector cleaner in the gas tank.

Suspect throttle positioning sensor (TPS)...can be tested...need a meter set to read 5 volts DC...Tps is located on throttle body...it has a three wire connector with wire colors: Brown/Orange...Dark Blue/Dark Green...And Pink/Yellow...Engine off...Push points of safety pins deep into into rear of in place connector PLUS METER LEAD on Brown/Orange wire and NEGATIVE METER LEAD into DarkBlue/DarkGreen...Set meter to read 5 volts...Start engine...At idle (Yes, I know it is running rough) then read meter...RECORD READING...Next rev engine to full throttle...RECORD READING...First reading must be .08 volts...Second must be 4.5 volts...If second reading is less than 3 volts...example 2.4volts TPS is culprit...Replace TPS...all readings OK? 1995 dodge neon cuts out during normal driving runs at full throttle

hi I assume this is a fuel injection vehicle and if so it sounds a lot like you have a throttle body problem or throttle sensor problem ,have you also checked that the fuel filter is not blocked, remove the fuel filter and blow thru it in the direction of flow and if your cheeks blow up while blowing thru the filter it is blocked or restricted -replace.
hope that helps .
