SOURCE: high rpms but no pick up

Sounds like a slipping clutch the M56lL 5 speed has no external adjustments so it's not a linkage issue. Usually the inspection port has a rubber plug in it on the top front of the transmission near the engine, you look inside through one of the gaps in the pressure plate to see how much pad is left on the clutch. But most likely it's just a worn clutch disk, or glazed pressure plate. Either way your going to need to have a mechanic replace the clutch assembly for you since its a tricky operation requiring special tools. I hope this helps!

Why is my transmission shifting down to third on hills while on cruise control when it never used to?

You will need to give specifics of your car, meanwhile I think it is normal, because when ascending, it is only normal for your vehicle to slow down, so a quick response by the accelerator is given to the need to maintain the speed which will in turn trigger the kick-down in ur tranny and send it to the 3rd gear, u will also notice that after it stabilises, the gear will shift into 4th and 5th smoothly.

2001 montana won,t runs about 2800rpms @70 don,t seen to be going into overdrive on adown hill slope when in overdrive with the shifter it drops the rpms down to 700rpms , and when you put the shifter into...

I think I understand the question. These transmissions are known for the 4th speed shaft shearing off the splines. 4th being overdrive. This won't let it shift into overdrive and also no engine breaking when you are coasting. In other words, when you are coasting your engine rpms will drop down to idle speed. So when in 3rd or drive manual, you do have engine breaking and the rpms fall slowly. The transmission is gonna have to come out to be repaired. I hope this helps.

04saab93linear rpms spike up when going down hills slowly

This is a common feature on many cars. If you press the brake on the way down the hill, the transmission will downshift and keep RPMs high in order to prevent your speed from increasing too much. If this bothers you, you can simply shift into neutral and brake manually. The only other option is to coast freely down the hill without brakes. No brakes = no downshift = no high RPMs.

92 prelude si (auto)

With normal acceleration the 1st to second shift point should be around 2500-3000 rpm. Most of your shifts under moderate acceleration will take place at this same point or when there a light load on the transmission. Under hard acceleration the RPMs will climp higher due to increased power needs and the computer will shift when less power is needed or the RPMs climb to an unsafe speed say5000-6000rpms (depending on where yours redlines). Also going up a steep hill will raise the RPMs higher and goind down a hill will cause a faster shift at lower RPMs. These can always be altered by an individual owner by adjusting shift points, using performance parts and if you have problems (low tranny fluid/trans issues). Your trans RPMS are fine and will vary depening on how your foot accelerates. The shift pattern should be the same every time you drive slow/medium/fast/, look for changes in those patterns you will also catch a problem early.
