The only way to know if you need engine repair or you have a bad sender is to hook up an oil pressure test gage to the sender port and manually check the pressure. You will need the deep oil pressure sending unit removal tool to get the sender out (I did this).
The transmission has nothing to do with the truck being 2 or 4 wheel drive. The output of the trans connects to a transfer case. The T C supplies the front & the rear wheels with power. All you would need to do is a normal transmission swap. A 2 wheel drive truck would just have a drive shaft vs a TC.
If it has spark and has gas, then there are only 2 possibilities left. 1. It is getting too much gas and is flooded. or 2. The engine has no compression due to the timing being off or has severe internal damage.
Most of the problems are caused by the converter. You must replace the converter when rebuilding or replaceiong the transmission. I knoe because I have several and that is the main problem, it goes out and damages the trans. I go with a heavey duty or bullit converter. I have several dodge rams with well over 300,000 miles anddo a lot of plowing and towing. I would order a heavy duty over the internet, not use the standard. there is no real diagram for the conversion vans you only have stock diagrams because glaval or primetime usually took the shells and made thier own interiors and yes i have seen alot of issues with these its a wonder im not bald just have to use basic electricity for the add ons they are not actually chrysler supplied items yes you can get them from chrysler but they order them from the other 2 companies that convert the vans
Sounds like you have a transmission problem, could be the valve body, or a bad band. I would check the fluid first it could be low. Just make sure the engine is warm, and the van is in park, then check the fluid.
The Sending Unit is Inside the Fuel Tank at the End of the Intake Line. You will have to Drop the Tank and Change it. Your Guage should be just fine after the Repair
