I have a 1988 jeep cherokke and we've just started hearing a knocking noise coming from the engine. It first started sounding like a bubbles and has since gotten worse while driving slower speeds and idling. What can be causing it?

If a knocking sound occurs at idle, a bearing for the camshaft or the crankshaft may be bad.

It may be piston slap. This is caused by either engine wear with the piston bores being too large for the pistons, or by poor manufacturing tolerances, or a combination of both.

To test for this, start the engine up first thing in the morning and run it for about thirty seconds while you listen carefully and memorise the sound and intensity. Turn the engine off quickly, remove the spark plugs and put two squirts of motor oil into each cylinder. Reinstall the plugs, start the engine up again and listen. If you have piston slap the noise will have been greatly reduced or even eliminated for about thirty seconds seconds and then returns.

The fix is to rebuild or replace the engine, but if it works just fine then don't worry. Many slappy engines keep going for tens of thousands more mile. The fact that your knocking is only at idle suggests your crankshaft is not to blame.

SOURCE: I have a knocking noise

I HAVE SAME JEEP SAME PROBLEM...I have found out after research that all these jeeps like yours and mine have a common problem with engine clogging and the valves sticking and the rocker arms coming off.....This is true I pulled my valve cover off and the rocker arm had come off because the valve was stuck ....Pressure between the rocker and the cam and the valve is the only thing that will keep the rockers from falling off......And when the valve starts to stick the rocker falls off.....This is sad but true.....Also it is badly clogged with black chuncks of burnt oil....I dont know what causes this other than the wrong weight oil....but I only used the wrong oil maybe 2 times...
There should be a recall on these because the rocker arms shouldnt come off.....I think the rockers are wrong from the factory....I am a level 2 chrysler tech.and also ASE certified.......It makes me angry that they built these so weak !! ....All you can do is remove the heads and have a complete valve job done and clean the oil pick-up tube in the oil pan as well....then a complete engine flush..
.....ONLY use 5w20 weight oil also........If you dont have the cash dont tear it down cause I almost guarantee you have the same problem as I.............Hope this helps.................Metalpoet

SOURCE: clicking noise , what is it , and how do i fix it?

I had this noise and found that the fan shroud was being hit by the fan. Renoved the fan shroud and the noise stopped. The shroud had broken into two pieces.

I hav a knocking noise under the hood of my jeep cherokee. I recently had the upper ball joints replaced and the knocking stop for a while and now its back full force. The noise sounds like its coming...

Knocking in the engine varies from simple failure to detonate to you are about to throw a rod. This is something that can be difficult to diagnose and if misdiagnosed, costly to repair. I would take that in to a mechanic as soon as possible. Barring that, I would check all your spark plugs.

Knocking noise

First confirm the oil level is adequate by checking the dip stick. If the oil level is okay you may have a partial blockage that is starving the oil line leading to the sensor. Missed regularly scheduled oil changes may result in this happening.
If sludge is the problem your dealer can recommend an oil additive that may clear out the problem.
You may also have a failed sensor as well.

Knocking noise in engine of 2002 Nissan maxima

This is hard to say with hearing the noise but try to pin point the noise , is it coming from the top or bottom of the motor , the knocking noise could be a bearing in the lower motor or may be something else making it sound like a bearing,

Hi! I have a jeep 2001 Laredo and a noise is coming from the engine.I wanted to sell the jeep but how can i get this fixed? Some mechanics do not want to get involved! Thanks!

Depends on the noise you are hearing and how the engine is performing with the noise versus before the noise came along. It come be something as simple as an idler pulley making noise which is replaceable in 10mins or crankshaft main bearings knocking which would be more cost/time effective to replace the engine. Need a better description of the noise to diagnose online. Top/bottom, knock/tick, does it go away when idling/under load etc... the more details the better.
