99 vw beetle, been overheating for a couple weeks off and on . put coolant in it . well, it was overheating bad and smoked and got real hot. so had it towed . called mecahnic to find out what was wrong and cost? he told me theres 2 fold problem. it could be radiator and thermostat (which was one option 575 cost) or he would not know until after radiator replacement if head gasket blown 2300-2400 so up to me if i wanted to risk radiator and it turns out to be head gasket i would have to pay 2400. needlesstosay , i called told he replaced the radiator but its a blown head gasket . so i have to pay 2400 to get car fixed. is this just messed up and was i just manipulated or am i just paranoid.

my concern is price of course, but the options of replacing radiator for 575 and if i was wrong and its broken head gasket i would have to pay 2300-2400. obviously, it was the 2300-2400 , but it was a con job on me , do you agree, he knew if it was blown

Check around, I'm sure that you can find someone that can do it for less money.

I don't know if the radiator was bad or not, so I can't offer advice on that.

If your mechanic charges $100.00 per hour or more, I can see where they get the quote from.

If you need more assistance, post a comment.

Where are you located?

Maybe we can help suggest a mechanic for you.

Thanks,

Tim

It is possible that the head gasket went and took out the radiator due to higher pressure. It is also possible that the radiator went out and the car overheated and took out the head gasket.

That is water under the bridge now. I don't believe that it was a con job, they just charge too high of a rate.

It is certainly too far away for me to fix it.

For what they are charging though, I could buy round trip airline tickets, all of the tools once I get there, rent a car, stay in a motel, eat at fancy restaurants and still do the job and make $25.00 per hour or more.

Shop around a little and you will find a better estimate.

    Thanks,

    Tim

Beetle thermostat

Just a couple things to mention here
  1. Is the thermostat in correctly? Don't take this wrong, but I've seen people put them in backwards, so just make sure the copper pellet is on the engine side
  2. Is there air trapped behind the thermostat? If hot coolant cannot get to the copper pellet, the thermostat will not open even though the engine gets hot. Ensure the engine coolant has had the air bled from the system.
  3. Is the water pump spinning? In the right direction? In other words, check the belt routing
Hope this helps

My 99 beetle heater wont get hot I changed the thermostat on it what could I check for.

it is actually more difficult to put coolant back in that many think. You likely have an air pocket. You have to put the fluid in then run the engine waiting for the thermostat to open, then add more coolant to top it off before putting the cap on. then make sure the overflow bottle is filled to half and watch that weekly so that it never gets low enough to start siphoning the radiator.

Speedometer on 99 vw beetle not working

He can if it's nothing more than a broken cable, otherwise it gets real difficult. Even getting to the ends of the cable behind the dash could be a frustrating experience.
