SOURCE: Reverse engages HARD!!!
Check for trans codes then I would suggest a fluid change if there are no trouble codes, many times these kinds of problems are caused by a little piece of dirt causing a shift solenoid to stick.

the fist thing you can/must check is the auto transmission oil level ? als the colour? it should be red not a brown colour as this indicates overdue for changing as part of routine servicing ? if you check your hand book ? it will explain how to check level of trans auto oil come back to board with findings or if this above is problem? or not ?
SOURCE: no reverse
U are going to have to have the trans torn down and replace the reverse clutch drum.
SOURCE: i have a 97 VW Golf auto trans, I have no reverse
Check your fluid level to make sure its up to the specified level, then I'd be checking out your linkage from your shifter inside the car right to the transmission, it sounds like to me your linkage may be worn enough to put the vehicle in drive but not reverse. The linkage bushings are a common problem on vdubs. See if you can put the car in reverse by moving the linkage arm directly attached to the transmission (make sure you have someone in the car with the brakes on or caulk the wheels) if it does go into reverse when you manually move the direct linkage arm at the transmission then replace your linkage bushings, if not then the only other problem would be a transmission internal problem. Good luck
vdubs 4-ever

no cant ajust bands tine for AAMCO it's free and if it is a cheep fix they will tell you but likely you need a new trans
try shifting into low gear and see if the truck responds
Testimonial: "We figured the trans needs to be replaced but someone mentioned the bands and we wanted to see what if we could find out more about it, thanks"
