Sounds like, the clutch pressure plate, is not opening. There are a few ways this might happen. There might be wear, in the pedal free play, or the cluch disc is excessivly worn. A good mechanic, may check the cluch pedal free play. Usually, as the clutch disc wears, the free play is reduced. most of the times, when the pedal is re adjusted, the cluch cannot open as much as it should. Most of the time clutches are sold in sets. A pressure plate, a disc, and a throwout bearing. A person just has to make sure the input shaft can align up, with the clutch disc, as the pressure plate bolts are tightened up. It is always best, to use new cluch pressure plate bolts and lock washer's.

My 1998 Pontiac sunfire car wont shift out of nuetrel

Does the clutch pedal go to the floor? If not the clutch is not the problem and the transmission or transmission linkage is, inspect all components for loose or damaged components.

My 98 sunfire is stuck in 1st gear,i think everything else is gone...what can i look for to fix it?

Assuming it's automatic transmission and given the age of the vehicle I would look for a new transmission on eBay or at a nearby car recycler. Rebuilding the stuck transmission, which would likely be needed, could cost more than what the car is worth. Also, there should be plenty of these gear boxes around - a very, very common vehicle.
If a standard gear box (never seen one in the sunfire but anything is possible) then the problem could be as simple as a broken or stuck shift cable/linkage. You can test the clutch separately - the car should be able to roll roll once you press the clutch - so if the clutch can disengage and re-engage then check your shifting linkage next.

1997 pontiac Sunfire will not shift into gear. I can shift it by hand with the lever on top of the transmission but it still will not move. Is there a vacum modulater on this model of car?

a vacum modulator does not prevent a car from shifting into gear. Usually when a car fails to move, internal parts of the transmission break and sometimes shatter prevent the clutch pack from functioning. The purpose of a vacum modulator is to allow the transmission to shift smoothly from one gear to the next, but now on allot of cars these days transmissions are solely controlled by the computer. If you transmission does have a vacum modulator then your will find a steel vacum line from the engine going to your transmission with short pieces of hose connecting the lines together.

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire that has problems shifting into gear. (manual trany). Have to force into 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and especially in reverse. Will grind going into reverse. Have to turn off...

Sounds like the clutch is going out. I would check the operation of the clutch slave cylinder. Also check the clutch master cylinder fluid level.

5 speed manual transmission wont shif gears while running

You probably have air in the system. You need to bleed the air out of the system so that it will disengage your clutch. The air in the system is compressing and, therefore, the slave cylinder can't reach the full extension.

Check the fluid level on your clutch slave cylinder. Have someone depress the clutch while visually observing the movement of the levers under the hood. Could also be a bad throwout bearing.

2002 Sunfire TCC Solenoid replacement

hi..the transaxle converter clutch . tcc. uses a solenoid -operated valve located in the automatic transaxle to mechanically couple the engine flywheel to the output shaft of the transmission through the torque converter.that reduces the slippage loss in the converter.reducing emissions.but check the vss first.which is called the vehicle speed sensor.they both work together .if the vss is not working right it wont call on the tcc.
