Key cylinder stopped turning. In disassembling to remove cylinder, all the pins and springs fell out.I was hoping to find a color coded wiring diagram so I can hotwire it to get it home(without using trial and error and maybe toasting something) Pete in Newburgh,N.Y.
ourhowse/Guru obviously has no idea what he/she is talking about... The ignition switch is in the dashboard, there is no rod to another switch, and there ARE (count em) 13 color coded wires to the switch, and a cable to the gear selector in the console.I managed to figure it out,and wired in a toggle switch for ignition and a push button for the starter so my kid can at least drive it until a new switch comes in. Thanks anyway....I guess....

Re: Grand am ignition key cylinder stopped turning.
There are no wires to your key and tumbler. All the key does is pull a rod that is connected to the ignition switch, which is at the bottom of your steering column. I suppose if there is no "chip" on your key, and you can get the steering wheel to turn, you could pull on that rod to get it running.
I'm sorry Nancy. I guess i didn't look close enough at the year. I'm so glad you got it going. Good thing your kid was there with the extra fingers so you could count all the way to 13.I'm sorry Nancy. I guess i didn't look close enough at the year. I'm so glad you got it going. It sounds like you need to replace the (electric)ignition switch. When they go bad you will usually hear a crunch sound, they can be so bad as to overheat and cause other issues.
There's probably nothing wrong with the OEM key/barrel.
The ignition switch does not usually go bad on Grand Cherokees but the ignition key cylinder does and it usually just stop turning, stuck in place. Key cylinder can be removed by taking the steering wheel off to access the little clip that's holding the key cylinder in place, inside the steering column.
Hi,
Yes it will work that way. Just drill out the retaining clip in the ignition switch that holds the lock cylinder in place. Be care ful with the switch. The new lock will slide right in with key in start position. If it has a rectangular looking metal pin securing it, drill into the plastic part of the switch with a 5/32 drill bit about 1/2 inch back toward the lock cylinder to take out the pop rivet holding the spring loaded pin mechanism in place. The spring comes out and push the pin down with a flatblade and pull lock out......Mike
Remove the sterring colomn covers to gain access to the ignition lock cylinder. On the lower side of ignition cylinder on the colomn is a small pin that is part of the ignition cylinder. Using a punch and hammer smack the pin and then try the key again. It may take several trys but it usually works. The cylinder should then be replaced or repaired after that.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the steering wheel, then remove the steering column covers.
Remove the turn signal and wiper switches.
Disconnect the ignition switch wiring.
On some models, the hole in the lock body for removing the ignition lock cylinder was not drilled by Volkswagen. To make the hole, use the following measurements in conjunction with the illustrations. Drill the hole where "a" and "b" intersect on the lock body. The hole should be drilled 0.19 inch (3mm) deep
Remove the lock cylinder by pushing a small drill bit or piece of wire into the hole and pulling the cylinder out. It might be easier to insert the ignition key, turn it to the right a little and pull on it.
To install:
Insert the lock cylinder into the housing with the key in the cylinder.
While gently turning the key side-to-side, press the cylinder in to the stop. It should click into place.
Temporarily fit the steering wheel onto the splines, then make sure the column locks and unlocks smoothly.
Install the switches, column covers, wiring and the steering wheel.
Connect the battery cable.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Center the steering wheel.
Remove the air bag.
Remove the steering column switches.
If the vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, detach the shift lock cable from the lock cylinder housing.
Remove the adapter sleeve from the steering column.
Remove the spring and horn contact ring from the steering column assembly.
Detach the sheer bolt.
Insert the ignition key and unlock the cylinder, then detach the wiring connectors.
Once all wiring has been detached, slide the housing off the steering column.
Mark and drill the lock cylinder as shown and described in the above procedure.
Compress the stop spring and pull the lock cylinder out of the steering column housing.
Put the new lock cylinder into the steering lock housing.
Insert the key into the lock cylinder.
While you gently turn the key, insert the lock cylinder fully into the housing.
The rest of the installation procedure is the reverse of removal.
NOTE
Always use a new shear pin when installing the lock cylinder.

Ignition Switch REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
The ignition switch is located at the bottom of the ignition key cylinder body. To remove the ignition switch, first remove the ignition lock cylinder.
1993–99 Golf and Jetta
NOTE: Always use a new shear pin when installing the lock cylinder.
You have to use a pin or paper lip to insert in hole in igmition switch to release the lock cylinder. The key has to be in "on" position I think.
Removal
Disconnect battery ground cable (14301) .
Turn lock cylinder key to RUN position.
Place a 3.17mm (1/8-inch) diameter wire pin or small drift punch in hole in upper steering column shroud (3530) under ignition switch . Press retaining pin while pulling out on ignition switch to remove it from lock cylinder housing (22074) .
Installation
Install ignition switch by turning it to RUN position and pressing retaining pin. Insert ignition switch into lock cylinder housing . Ensure ignition switch is fully seated and aligned in interlocking washer before turning key to OFF position. This will permit cylinder retaining pin to extend into lock cylinder housing hole.
Rotate ignition switch, using lock cylinder key, to ensure correct mechanical operation in all positions.
You have to have the ignition lock exposed, take the covers off above and below the lock body that holds the cylinder.
Insert the key fully into the keyway, and turn it to ACC. On the ignition lock body, press on the "stop pin", that pokes out of the lack body, above where the cylinder is housed. Press on the "stop-pin", and extract the cylinder. If the key can not be turn ed to ACC, the cylinder will not come out.
