2003 dodge neon sxt

Here are the steps;
) Park on a level surface. safety
) Block all the other wheels. safety
) Put the vehicle gearshift in PARK. safety
) Release the handbrakes.
) Slightly break the rear wheel lug nuts seal while on ground. Just loosen do not remove.
) Jack up the rear wheel.
) Check to see the wheel will turn so you know the brake shoes are not binding against the drum.
) Now you can remove the lug nuts and wheel.
) Remove the drum. Some times the drum has frozen on with rust. You may have to use a hammer and hit along the drum near the outer edges to break it free.

Drums will have threaded holes on the outside (2) that you will be able to put bolts in and thus jack the drum off of the axle by turning the bolts into the drum.

You need to manually adjust the brakes after putting new brake shoes on. The automatic adjuster has adjusted for wear in the old shoes which will make the new shoes too tight.

With drum brakes there is a rubber grommet like cap on the back plate pull that out and then use a brake tool or screwdriver to loosen the adjuster to get the drum off.

Dodge neon 1998 brakes are sqecking it not the brake it

You stopped short on your last sentence. Here is your solution.
Remove the rear wheels and brake drums. Take sand paper - coarse and sand the top of the brakes - do NOT sand on the drums with coarse - use 220 or finer sand paper on your brake drums.
This usually will fix it for about 6 months.

We found a leak in one of the rear brakes in our 05 Dodge Neon SXT. while driving, the brakes would respond with one pump, then the next my foot would go to the floor. if i pushed hard as they were on

if you found a leak, was is an air leak or a fluid leak? Since you state the rear brakes were leaking I assume its brake fluid. You must clean away all fluid and have the car securely supported in the air to see were the leak is coming from with someone else pressing on the brake pedal while you watch underneath the area with the problem

How do you take the drum off the rear tire to change brake shoes

You should see 2 holes that will take an 8mm bolt. Thread 2 bolts in and keep turning them in evenly, drum should come out as you turn in. Make sure emergency brake not holding you up, and if so, back off adjustment. If shoes too tight, you'll have to use small tool or screwdriver & lift adjuster lever up through hole and back off adjuster.
