The timing chain broke on my 2004 cavalier ls 2.2L ecotec engine. Did the pistons bend the valves or does it have interference?

SOURCE: timing chain noise 2005 cavalier 2.2 ecotec

Just the guide is probably making the noise. So either a new guide or a new chain. I would start with guide first, unless chain looks loose or cruddy

SOURCE: VALVE TO PISTON CLEARANCE ENGINE

The 2.2 eco is a chain driven engine it does not have a timing belt but if for some reson the chain were to break I would imagine there would be some damage but having the chain break would be something I personally have never seen. Hope this helps

2004 chevy cavalier problems

This is an interference engine and if the chain breaks you could have problems with the valves and pistons.

Changing the timing chain on my 2004 cavalier, and everything's back in place, cranking by hand, the chain locks up, what am I doing wrong?

It appears that you do not have the timing correct on the camshaft/s and the crankshaft. The intake or exhaust valves are hitting the pistons when you turn the engine over. You need to make sure that the marks are exactly correct. NOW, for the big question,,,,,,, Was the chain broken? Was the engine running when it broke? I have seen this myself and repaired one, This will likely bend 2 exhaust and 2 intake valves. Good luck.

Timing chain broke will this bend valves

It will on some BMW and Honda engines. These are called interference engines. I dont think any US cars have interference with piston and valves.

TIMING CHAIN BROKE ON MY 2002 2.7 LITER LXI WOULD THE VALVES BEND

The Chrysler 2.7 is an interference engine which means that the piston can go up far enough to hit the valves and bend them. The car would need to be inspected and the timing will have to be calibrated again by a dealer or mechanic after the chain is replaced.

My timing chain went and they are telling me that it is an intereference engine and should have belt rollers... What does this mean and the car was not driven when it went it was merely being started. I...

If it broke while being started you more than likely have very little piston or valve damage even if it is an interference engine which I am not sure of. I have no idea what they mean by belt rollers when talking about the cam chain. It is a chain not a belt. You should be able to remove all spark plugs then spin the engine over with the starter an check the compression. If the compression is good then you more than likely have no serious damage. At that point all you can do is replace the cam chain and see what you then have. Once you get this fixed, sell the car.

What type of engine is in a 2004 cavalier sedan. What could cause the timing chain to slip so bad it ruined all 4 valves. We turned off the car and when we came out it would not start.

When a belt slips it is generally because the belt got so old that it has stretched or torn. That can also happen if the tensioner goes bad and releases pressure that keeps the belt tight.
Most timing belts should be replaced at between 60 and 80 thousand miles.
As far as the valve damage, the belt keeps the crankshaft and pistons "in phase" with each other.
If the belt fails, the valves will strike the pistons often damaging both. Some engines have no allowance for being out of phase but even ones that do can have the same thing happen. As far as what "type" engine you have I can't remember if it is an "interference" design or not, but as I said valve damage can happen in any engine.
If there are any marks on the pistons, make sure you sand off any sharp edges or they can act as hot spots which can cause pre-ignition.
Even valves that appear undamaged should be checked for straightness...even one thousandth bend will cause a failure.

2oo2 cavalier timing chain broke need to know how to fix it??

With a new motor most likley. When a timing chains break pistons tend to collide with valves which can punch holes in the pistons or bend/ break valves. Usually at this point it is more economical to replace the engine than to actually fix it.
