Driving vehicle and power went out in dash and no lights. pulled over and car died. Battery cable was loose. Placed cable back on and tightened. Car started up and then died. Removed battery and charged. Car started but battery not charging. Is this the alternator and are there any fuses that should have been checked?
Place a voltmeter on the battery and read it before and after it starts. If it shows an increase in voltage, then the alternator is working. The voltage goes down as the battery becomes fully charged. Many garages will check it for free.

The instructions for installing a new alternator usually read to fully charge the battery (12.3 - 12.8 volt range). Otherwise, the alternator will be damaged when it initializes. I have seen some extreme damage result from installing a new alternator with a low-charge battery. The torque required to turn an alternator when damaged in this scenario is unbelieveable!

I am having the same problem with my 2004 Elantra. I have had the alternator tested twice and did replace the battery. This morning I had it running ad put a volt meter on it ( red to the battery pos black to the engine block) I did get a reading of 14 volts for about 30 seconds then the idle lowered and the voltage dropped to 12 volts. I tried this again later but could not get a voltage reading above 12 volts with the motor running. Any suggestions?

The easiest way to check is with the car running, disconnect the positve side of the battery, if the car dies, then it is the altenator, if the car keeps running then it is the battery. If you have a volt ohm meter, check the chrge going to the battery you should get between 12 and 14 volts if it is lower than 12 you have an altenator issue. the altenator should always produce enough to charge the battery and run the car at the same time, if not then the battery wears down.

Escape had a similar issue later in 2006. My alternator died and I needed replacement. After replacing, the light would come on and off at times. When everything running (i.e. radio, air conditioner, driving lights) and tocuh electric windows up the power would lower and sometimes battery light on dashboard would come up.
