Thanks Very Much Sir......I bought a use tran and it's still doing the same thing, driving me nuts.....I change the oil...didn't know it had a filter, I was told it didn't have one...i'll check that...Thanks again.

Filter is in the transmission. You have to pull it and tear it down to replace it. Check the wires/plugs going to the pressure solenoids. This is why I said time and material. You have to fiscally check all the solenoids and check wiring for continuity. Since you have the same problem with two transmissions. It is the wiring or PCM.

Pressure control solenoids would be my first guess. 91, this would be a time and material job to me. Up to a transmission rebuild. Or wiring

If it won't shift down to 1st when you come to a stop but you can shift it down manually its probably the tranny computer located under the carpet on the frnt passenger side floor. 1991- 1993 had weak electronics in the computers go to a junkyard and get a new one. if not the right symptom refer to comment 1

SOURCE: high rpm when shifting on third gear

this car's Transmission is based off of a vacuum lines leading into it. check to see if all the vacuum lines are all still attached for the transmission and engine. If any are found to be off...find out their proper loaction and see if the problem goes away. if none are found to be off then look into cracks or damage to them.(i would replace ALL of them since those hoses are inexpensive). Then find out when the transmission fluid and filter was changed in your car....since its 18 years old. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Rough shifting automatic transmission on Honda Accord from 1st to 2nd gear

it has a problem with the second gear drum it cracks and does not fully engauge the n shifts to 3rd ..many honda owners also learn the 8 bucks a quart is the only fluid to pour in a honda..but remember 3 qaurts per drain and fill the tranny holds 7q ....it will take a case to do a drain flush...a high pressure flush will ruin a automatic tranny with alot of miles or metal deposits floating around inside..DRAIN AND FILL 3 QUARTS AT A TIME NO GASKET NEEDED ITS BUILT AND DESIGNED LIKE A MANUAL TRANNY

SOURCE: the engine rpms rev when shifting

Your trans is slipping, u are going to need to have it checked out at a trans shop, they will test drive it in most cases for free and report what they think is wrong or recommend more diagnostic work if they are unsure..

SOURCE: The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not

The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?

Transmision starts out in 1st shifts to 2nd then third but will not shift into overdrive , but once it reaches 3rd gear ,it stays there when you come to a stop . after that it will only shift manually...

Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Thank you for using fixya and have your Safari scanned for the DTC codes that would indicate what issues your transmission is having to put you in to limp mode.

Hesitation and backfiring when accelerating

there will be codes stored so the scanner in use has not got the right protocols to read the ECM
Nissan products have to be set using a screw in the ECM to get to read the codes
you have to be specific with make , model , year , type of equipment to get closer

1996 gmc jimmy won`t shift from 1st to 2nd

IF the abs dash light is on and if the speedometer is sluggish or not working at all, it is probably a bad speed sensor on the transmission. and easy fix under $40 for the part. Mine was stuck in second gear for a while then worked then it stuck in first gear and i had the CHECK ENGINE light on.

I just started having the same problem. car wont go out of 2nd

unless youve done your regular maintenance-change trans oil ajust shifting cable and test solenoids-u r in for a rebuild-all the moving parts get heat varnish on them from 10 yrs + so go ahead and see 1st if adjustments help-get a manual-maybe your just low on fluid
