My brake lights on a BMW 318ti are on all the time when the running lights are turned on at night. In the daytime, when the running lights are off, the brake lights function normally (they are on when the brake pedal is depressed and off when the brake pedal is not depressed). What might be the problem? Could a relay be miswired?
Check carefully the brightness of the stop/tail lamp bulbs when in operation.
1) Perhaps someone has managed to insert the stop/tail bulbs into the lamp holder 180 degrees out of rotation,
or
2) If the wiring has been interfered with, the stop and rear parklamp circuit connections are crossed over.
Either of the above errors will have the effect of :-
when running lights on, hi wattage (stop) lamp on;
when brake stopswitch operated, low wattage (running) lamp on.
