its still the factory stereo...and no the air bag light is not on...Im trying to control the radio from the steering wheel, but the buttons for that is not working...i.e. mode, & volume control..

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

yeah reason i was asking about the air bag is because there is a ribbon wire in the column that lets those buttons be connected but still let the steering wheel turn i have seen those break but they are very expensive and usually disables the air bag in the steering wheel as well since the air bag is hooked to that wire as well. it could be a number of things other than that as well though. could be a faulty head unit or plugs getting corroded or coming loose anywhere in between. how long have you had the car some of the factory head units cannot be controlled with the buttons on the wheel wondering if they have ever worked since you have had the car maybe someone got a new radio or steering wheel out of the junk yard before you acquired the car?

is it still the factory stereo or did someone change the head unit out? also is your air bag light on in the dash?

Which fuse to change for steering wheel lights and gear shifter lights 2010 ford edge

It's not a fuse , the SJB - smart junction box controls these lights ! This is fords body control module . If the Heater / A/C control panel ,hazard switch ,headlamp switch , message center switch all work, it is not a fuse . The gear shifter I would say the bulb is burnt out . The steering wheel lights could be out because of an open in the clock spring . The clock spring is a device inside the steering column under the steering wheel that keeps your horn , cruise control , radio buttons etc... connected electrically . How cars clock spring works

Steering wheel controls not working

If the radio works from the dash then unlikely to be a fuse. need to remove the steering shroud just behind the steering wheel and check for any loose connections is where I would start.

I have a '93 jeep cherokee and my horn doesn't work. I've checked the fuse and it's fine but now i don't know where to locate the horn itself to check for disconnections or to replace...

LOOK UNDER THE LOWER AIR DEFLECTOR FROM BELOW THE RADIATOR. IF YOU HOT WIRE CAR HORN AND IT WORKS.YOU HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE AIRBAG IN STEERING WITH HORN CONTROL BUTTONS.YOU NEED TO DISABLE AIRBAG IN STEERING WHEEL WHEN REPLACING AIRBAG AND HORN CONTROL BUTTON PAD.JUST TURN OFF RADIO FIRST, THEN DISCONNECT REMOVE THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.WAIT 20 MINUTES BEFORE WORKING ON AIRBAG AND HORN PAD IN THE STEERING WHEEL.

Horn does not work on a 1993 cutlass ciera

Try to find the horn and use a test light to try to ground out one or the other contacts. The horn should be energized at all times, as long as the battery is charged.

The horn should sound if you ground out one or the other terminal with a test light. If not, then the horn is bad.

Also, one can check the button at the steering wheel. If one uses a test light to ground out the switch there, the horn should sound.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Without Air Bag
See Figures 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8
Disconnect the battery ground cable before removing the steering wheel. When installing a steering wheel, always make sure that the turn signal lever is in the neutral position.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. If your vehicle is equipped with controls for the radio on the steering wheel proceed as follows:

  1. Pry out the control button assembly with a thin bladed tool along the top of the edge of the assembly.
  2. Disconnect the steering wheel control.

  1. On vehicles without the radio controls on the steering pad, take a thin-bladed tool and pry the pad off the steering wheel. On wheels with a center cap, pull off the cap.

  1. After lifting the trim off, pry the horn wires from the back of the pad. On some models gently push down on the horn lead and turn left, the wire and spring will then come out of the canceling cam tower.

Cruise control, and radio controls on steering wheel, now air bag

The problem is the coiled ribbon contact under the steering wheel (we call it the clock-spring contact) that connects the stereing wheel controls to the steering column wiring harness, this is a printed circuit that is coiled to allow the wheel to move and still have a psychical contact for the wheel switch's and the airbag, anyway replace that contact coil, u must disarm the airbag to do this repair, follow the factory procedure to do this or serious injury can result if the airbag fires.
