1986 plymouth horizon falls on its face going down the road intermittently. I have tried a distributor pick up and coil. The car has a new weber carb and fuel pump. It also has a complete tune up with fuel filter. The car started doing this before any of the maintenance. The tank had been checked to see if its clean and the lines blown through to check for blockages. I noticed this morning the cooling fan doesnt keep running after the car is shut off anymore. It used to run for 10 min or so every time. Any help is appreciated.

I'd check the electric going to the fuel pump as well as any other devices. An intermittent short, bad ground wire can stop the fuel pump.
I'd be more specific with the description. "Falls on it's face", is not a good description.

The car loses power and you can hear backfiring through the exhaust and a 1986 horizon has a mechanical fuel pump so there is no power to check

  • Ronald Thompson Nov 22, 2013

How does the mechanical fuel pump get the fuel to the engine? The fuel pumps I saw for the Horizon all had electric connections on them.

  • zack jacobs Nov 23, 2013

No electric connections on this one or the factory one I just replaced

What about vapor lock? Are all the heat shields in place protecting the fuel lines?

  • zackerygj Nov 23, 2013

that was one of the first things i checked everything is good there

1986 dodge with a 2001 360 dodge magnum motor 600cfm edelbrock carb, air gap edelbrock intake. new plugs (e3s) new wires new coil new ballast.. is all in time.. wont start help

Are you getting spark? You've put a 2001 engine into a 1986 body. The 2001 engine ran with an engine control module (ECM), the 1986 doesn't have that. The 1986 probably has an electronic ignition module that works with the 1986 coil and 1986 reluctor/distributor. You may want to compare the two distributors and the two coils.

1986 plymouth horizon bad gas mileage

I really can't give much advice. Since you have modified the original configuration, you're really on your own. If you had a 4 gas analyzer you could monitor the exhaust gas and figure out if the carb is adjusted as lean as possible, and if the timing is correct for what you are trying to do.

Plymouth 1985 horizon

You have a car with a 2 barrel carb and a very primitive computer. So the usual steps to diagnose the problem won't work.
It could be a long list of things, especially the carb itself.
The common cause of lack of power is lack of fuel, but it could also be spark timing, a vac leak, or other things.
A mechanic that understands carburetors will have to run down a list of possible causes to find it. And you may want a second opinion if they decide it is the carb, because that would be a $500 part plus labor.

I have a xr3 ford escort 1600 with a weber carb,it backfires and spits fuel up

Clean the Carburator completely. If the problem persists, check the timing, timing chain, and distributor coil.

1992 Plymouth Acclaim While driving up the road

when you say coil, do you mean the ignition coil or the pick up coil (aka pickup module)? It is located under the rotor in the distributor-if you replaced the distributor (did you really?) it should have had a new unit in it, the only other thing I could guess is you have some sort of issue with a fuse or relay for the ignition.

My 1986 toyota 2wd pick-up truck has no spark at the coil, the guys at auto - zone tested the coil for resistance and it check ok. the rotor turns when I crank the engine, what else should I check.-

Hello i can assist you. Hello your ignition module will cause a no spark you find your module under your distributor cap.You will see two wires go into your distributor shaft these will connect to your pick up distributor module. To remove and replace this part you will need to unscrew the distributor cap lift off and remove retaining screws on the module once you have removed this replace it with your new module reinstall your distributor cap and start.

1990 plymouth van will not stay running

Try replacing the Hall Effect Sensor that's underneath the Distributor. It consists of a round disk with a pick-up coil that senses rotation of the distributor shaft. The connection to the coil may become intermittent or open up completely. The engine will shut down when this happens. For a while the problem may be heat-sensitive or affected by vibration.
