Hello, I have problem with my Prelude 5gen. It has got automatic transmission gearbox which has code M6HA. In my case the problem with gear shifting is only when the engine and gearbox are cold. Then when I change gear stick from P to D4 or R the car shakes once. The situatation repeats when i change from R to D4 and invert. When I driving when gearbox change gear from 1st to 2nd and others gear change is hard and uncomfortable. And also in some situation the rpm rise a little without gear change. Gear change in these situation gear change durates 1 second and gear shift is hard. When my gearbox is warm none of these problems occurs. I suppose in my case I have problem with Solenoid Valve. But which one and where is located in my gearbox. Aha, I forgot. I changed my ATF oil and refill it OEM HONDA oil ATF-Z1. The old oil in my gearbox was black, but without filings. The smell of my old oil in my opinion was normal. Just normal exausted oil. Can you help me and discribe first steps to diagnose my problems. P.S. I guess these people don't read it's a automatic transmission not manual. His problem could be one of many. Number one bad mounts. 2. Too much oil into it, 3 if when driving and the Rev count goes up without it changes that could be clutches going bad causing it not to go into high speed Or it down shift when it should not. Check oil level first for shifting problem. Check mounts for slamming problem. When the car is cold it revs higher than normal so if the mounts are bad u would get that hard shift.
The auto was notorious for clutch pack failure. Tolerances were tight in the inner workings and this caused inadequate oil flow and poor cooling. Sooner or later the auto transmissions fail. You could have the transmission rebuilt but that will cost a bit to do it so it wont break again. I might recomend going back to honda atf and changing the fluid again. If that does not work try an additive oil for the transmission. I had some sucess with the recomend product.
last resort, have it swapped to a manual transmission. This is a cheap alternative as f series transmissions from the accord can bolt up to the h22 and can be found cheap at the expense of higher gear ratios.

First thing to do,try to pump your clutch before you shift into 1st gear then if you feel makes better, most probably you have problem with your hydraulic clutch system, check the clutch line if there is an evidence of fluid leaking or it could be internal leak.
Second thing to do, check your transmission oil, may be it' s too old or you use a thick oil thats why when cold its hard to shift then when the engine rich the normal temperature(warm) the oil become thin and the shifting will smooth. Remember the very old oil become thicken and the purity is gone and can cause of hard shifting. in this regards i suggest you to change the transmission oil and check the used oil if there is small peace of metals, then you are in big trouble,

it has a problem with the second gear drum it cracks and does not fully engauge the n shifts to 3rd ..many honda owners also learn the 8 bucks a quart is the only fluid to pour in a honda..but remember 3 qaurts per drain and fill the tranny holds 7q ....it will take a case to do a drain flush...a high pressure flush will ruin a automatic tranny with alot of miles or metal deposits floating around inside..DRAIN AND FILL 3 QUARTS AT A TIME NO GASKET NEEDED ITS BUILT AND DESIGNED LIKE A MANUAL TRANNY

Hi there. Although the Dealer has changed the oil, did they do a 'Stall Test' whilst the gearbox was cold and again when at normal running temperture? If not, that's what they must do firstly. This will identify whether you have a slipping clutch/s. The Honda autobox also includes what is known as accumulators - these control how each clutch is engaged during acceleration. For example, if you are accelerating slighly/smoothly, you want each gear to be engaged gently and smoothly, whereas, when accelerating hard, you need the gear engaged quickly and hard to aviod clutch slippage. Thus, the fact that you are experiencing a hard engagement might mean that an accumulator/s is seized. If that's the case, it will mean that the autobox will need stripping, cleaning and be checked for worn components. Hope this helps, Scottech.

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.
