* When replacing a water pump, it is necessary to drain the cooling system.
* Any components--belts, fan, fan shroud, shaft spacers, or viscous drive clutch--should be removed to make the pump accessible. Some pumps are attached to the cylinder block as shown below.

Installing a water pump.

* Loosen and remove the bolts in a crisscross pattern from the center outward.
* Insert a rag into the block opening and scrape off any remains of the old gasket.

WARNING
When working on the coolant system (for example, replacing the water pump or thermostat), a certain amount of coolant will spill on the floor. The antifreeze in the coolant causes it to be very slippery. Always immediately wipe up any coolant that spills to reduce or eliminate the chance of injury.

* When replacing a water pump, always follow the procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
* Most often a coating of good waterproof sealer should be applied to a new gasket before it is placed into position on the water pump.
* Coat the other side of the gasket with sealer, and position the pump against the engine block until it is properly seated.
* Install the mounting bolts and tighten them evenly in a staggered sequence to the torque specifications with a torque wrench. Careless tightening could cause the pump housing to crack. Check the pump to make sure it rotates freely.
* The water pumps on many late-model OHC engines are driven by the engine's timing belt. When replacing the water pump on these engines, always replace the timing belt.
* Make sure all pulleys and gears are aligned according to specifications when installing the belt.

Please rate and have a great day:)

The water pump is driven by the cambelt and requires you stripping off the cambelt etc to get to the pump. you will need to replace Hydrlic tensioner when doing this even if the cambelt is has been done recently

Overheats replaced water pump and thermostat no combustion gases found 1997 legacy 2-5 liter

We just did the same car with the same prob. The block was cracked and was pressurizing the cooling system causing the thermostat not to open. Remove your thermostat and run the car if it doesn't overheat you need a motor. Ours didn't show any hydrocarbons in the coolant either, so try the simple

1997 subaru legacy 2.5l coolant leaking from passenger side front left bottom of motor. If the water pump was leaking would it pool and leak from that area? or does any know any other common problems that...

Known head gasket problems on those cars. Suburu dealership have a good product called stop leak. Use that first add a bottle into the radiator run the car to operating temp. Recheck the belly pan for leaks. hope this helps.

Overheat on my 1997 Subaru Legacy GT

Sorry if this might break your heart. I have '98 Outback which is the same 1st generation DOHC 2.5 engine. These are common head gasket problem (I'd say 100% of every engine sooner or later) once you have had your car overheated.

You will not get this comfirmed by just have your mech check the compression on the cylinder because we call it phantom leak (internal leak which can be confirmed with hydrocarbon in coolant). And then you will end up replace every other thing before you could reach the source of problem.

Other signs of this issue are as following: random overheating after freeway or uphills drive, bubbles in coolant overflow tank, oil residue in coolant overflow tank, bubble nioses from the a/c vent.

You're looking at $1000-1500 repair by independent mech as they have to pull engine out to fix the problem. I had mine fixed two weeks ago and now my baby is running like a champ.

Legacy wagon tail light replacement

The one thing youll find with subaru's is that they like to put nuts in funny places that are hard to access. There are either 3 or 4 nuts holding the tail-light assembly in place, which means youll need to take out most of the inner panels to access the others. You should not need a sealant unless the rubber seal is done for or there is water inside the car. Hope this helps
