1998 Jeep cherokee classic Popping noise

So pretty much every time i start my car this problem happens. What happens is when i start driving and somewhere between about 10mph and 40 mph, the car stops accelerating and then there is a pop then the engine revs back probably because i dont take my foot off the gas and the car then runs fine and it doesnt happen until the next time i start my car again. Also the idling has been crazy lately, it will drop real low and the car will start shaking then it will just kick back up then it will do it again.

Sounds like your egr valve is sticking, or a vacuum leak, or sticking valves.

I have a 1998 jeep cherokee classic with 4 litre 6 it just developed a coolant leak in the front center of the engine pulley for water pump has a little play in it and i cant tell if its the water pump...
It sounds like your water pump is going out. Water pumps have a weep hole on them and when the seal is going out it will start leaking. Also you shouldn't have any play on the pulley.

The airbag light on my jeep classic xj comes on when ignition is turned on,then goes out,then as i started to drive it came on again..my car made like a brake grinding noise when this happened
Sounds like it is time for some brake pads - -have them looked at. The things that happened together are just a coincidence. I would have the brakes looked right away to save major damage.


Also - Take down the Vin # and call the local dealer - ask them about recalls and Service Bulletins.

1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a rough idle at first
You do have a filter and it's mounted right on top of the pump on outside of tank...it is also the pressure regulator. You really should put a pressure gauge on the fuel system and check it out though. you may find there is a problem elsewhere. Good and proper testing is the only way to get answers about problems especially now that systems are all electronically controlled.

Jeep popping problem
  • A couple of check its.
  • Fuel starvation (filter)
  • Plug wires cross firing. At nightm start the engine and watch the plug wires. If they are cross firing you will srr the arcing between them. It is pretty, but not supposed to be. Wires should not vross or touch each other. More than likely they are due for replacement anyway because insulation is broken down Letting up on the fuel lowers ignition loads. If you change the wires, do a complete tune up, plugs, air And fuel filter. Good luck and chk out the electric show under your hood tonight.

Did you know Jeep did a recall and paid for replacement of catalytic converters on 1996 models (don't know about any others) - they reimbursed me for work done, up to a point - hope this helps!
