Replacing bad camshaft position sensor

On my 1991 pontiac bonneville 3800 v6, I have a service engine code for no camshaft position sensor. HOW do I replace / what is involved in replacing the camshaft position sensor? When I am done, will service engine code for this problem be fixed as well?

Thank you for the precise assistance. I thought it would be far more complicated or at least involve the removal of a great deal more to get to.

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
  2. Remove water pump pulley attaching bolts, then the serpentine belt and water pump pulley.
  3. Disconnect sensor wiring connector and remove sensor retaining bolt.
  4. Twist and pull sensor to remove.
Reverse procedure to install and prior to installing new sensor, lubricate sensor O-ring.

It is located under the water pump. Make sure when you remove the sensor that you rotate the crank shaft and look in the hole to make sure the pick up magnet is still in there. Sometimes they come loose and cause a no start or long crank. You will need to have the code cleared still.

I need to locate the camshaft sensor on a 3800 series ii V6

Here is a link with a diagram about half way down the page that points out the sensor as number 8. It looks like it should be near the oil filter just up and over a bit. There is some good info on this page to that may help. Good luck! Have a great day!

1999 Pontiac Bonneville 3800 engine. How do I replace the water thermostat?

Follow the top radiator hose down. It will connect to the engine. At the point that it connects to the engine is where the thermostat is located. This thermostat cover will have two bolts. Some of the 3800 engines have a temp sensor in the housing. You will not have to mess with the sensor. The housing will have 2 bolts that hold it on. Remove the two bolts and the housing will lift off. And the thermostat will be under the housing. Replace the thermostat. And reinstall the housing.
