Try manually shifting it? Also, is there any chance you disconnected a wire or hose to the transmission valve body when you had the pan off? Or any chance you got some dirt inside?
I own a 1994 BMW 540i with an automatic transmission. The filler hole/plug is located under the transmission oil pan. Picture in your mind an inverted cone with a hex plug inside the top of the cone. You will need to remove the plug and pump fluid into the pan until it overflows. Also, this must be done with the engine running and the transmission in neutral.
Do not try this unless to you have the proper equipment to raise your car, keep it level, and have four jackstands in addition to the special fluid and pump.
if there is no dipstick on a transmission there is NO need to add fluid. This is called a sealed transmission some BMW have this type of tranny the oil is changed at service intervals that vary from different companies/make and model the average is 24,000-60,00 interval. the oil needs to be measured and pumped into transmission from the bottom of vehicle. The fill drain plug I believe is on the left side of the transmission about 1in above where the oil pan bolts on. I think it is a 7mm allen bolt.If you are topping off the fluid make sure to check the fluid level at the fill hole while the engine temp is still cold. It should trickle out while the engine is in park and running. Make sure to tighten to spec and use approved oil. There should be a label on the transmission pan itself listing the part number for the fluid to use.
The transmission temperature must be between 86° to 130° F (30° to 55° C) before checking With engine running, switch on AC While holding vehicle with brakes, place transmission into each gear briefly With engine running and transmission in park, remove Fill/Check plug. If a small amount of oil runs out, fluid level is correct. If no oil runs out fluid level is low, add fluid as required through Fill/Check plug hole. When level is correct, reinstall Fill/Check plug and tighten to correct torque.
The transmission fluid is not to be checked or touched unless there is a malfunction in the system and the fluid has to be drained to repair it. The transmission is sealed form the factory and the fluid lasts the lifetime of the unit.
