How to reattach serpentine belt on 1999 saab 9-3

Sounds like your serpentine belt broke. It drives the alternator, p/s pump, a/c compressor, and water pump.

I am assuming you mean the serpentine accessory belt. It would help if you would specify the model and year.

probably just shorter belt will not go round air-con

This is for the 2.3L; you have two choices Short or Long. Short eliminates pulley # 1, Long if you want to use pulley # 1. If your car don't have pulley # 1 you would use the short belt.

You can bypass both the AC compressor and the middle serpentine idler pulley with a 6PK1790. The middle pulley is bypassed by running the belt straight line from the upper rear serpentine idler straight to the power steering pulley, then over the water pump (the smooth pulley powered by the back side of the belt) and down to the engine drive pulley (harmonic balancer), bypassing the AC compressor) This works fine. On 9.5 models, the same basic idea, but a slightly different sized belt.

Hi,the serpentine belt is tensioned automatically by means of a spring loaded tensioner,this is released by using a long 1/2 inch extension bar which fits into a square hole, once pulled back the tensioner can then be held by a nail etc, which is inserted into a hole which aligns with another hole,thus holding the tensioner back in a pre-loaded position to allow you to replace the belt,once replaced you can then pull back the extension bar to remove the nail again and then slowly let off the tension, IF replacing the tensioner, The new one comes pre-loaded with a pin in location to hold it ,hope this is of some help, Bill.

Jack up o/s of car and support on stand
Remove front o/s wheel

remove bottom engine covers from inside o/s wheel arch and also bottom engine cover(plastic)

support engine with jack; remove yolk engine mount ( on belt side)

Put 1/2" extension drive into top of belt tensioner and pull toward engine - you can now put a 3mm drill bit or allen key into hole at side of tensioner to hold in position.

remove serpentine belt

from underneath car, use 8mm ( I think) allen key to remove centre bolt from belt tensioner

It should now come off of the car

fitting is the reverse of the above
