Exhaust fumes in car - 2000 Subaru Legacy

* Check for breaks or cracks in exhaust pipe system.
* Check for cracks, rust holes in fire wall. (the wall between you and the engine.
* Fumes from engine exhaust has toxins and carbon monoxide.
* Explosive fumes can result from a over rich mixture.
* Cracks in exhaust affects the back pressure to engine.
* Crack in exhaust can direct hot fumes and may start fire when parked over rubbish or grass.
* Fumes can cause black out to passengers and driver.
* Have auto shop check system for fumes (co2 monitor) after fix.
* Be safe. Don't drive car till checked.

Bad trunk or hatch seals can also let exhaust fumes get in the cabin area.

I am not sure what fumes you are talking about,but if they are exhaust fumes you smell there is probably an exhaust pipe leak,joint leak, or manifold leak. Take it to a reputable exhaust shop or garage for free inspection.

check for leaks or holes in your exhaust .check full system.

Could be a leaking gasket where the pipe or manifold connects to the engine. The fumes would come in thru the vents.

Three things come to mind. You may have an exhaust system leak. Or, the rear hatch is not closing good, or not sealing properly, allowing exhaust fumes to enter the rear compartment. If you drive with the rear windows open, the exhaust fumes will be drawn into the vehicle while the vehicle is moving. Just some ideas on where to look for the source of the fumes. Don't take the problem lightly. The fumes can be deadly, or at the very least, make you ill.

Get out of cabin! Somehow some way you have a leak in your exhaust sytem that is making it's way into the car. Or you have a situation where your setup allow exhaust in to car. If exhaust is trapped under car body because the tip isn't directing the gas away from vehicle, it may be collecting and entering vehicle. Fix exhaust system and direct fumes away from car. If you have fumes in cabin regularly, that is deadly. If you have an SUV or some kind of car/truck with a back window that rolls down (4-Runner or Tahoe, etc.) or opens into cabin space and the exhaust is under it, it may be being sucked into vehicle. Move exhaust tip. Check for leaks under car or an area where exhaust could build up or both as well. If your exhaust stayed in the system till the end and is directed away from car, this should'nt happen. Your manifold(s) leaking or something as well? Check from manifold(s) to tip(s) for major leak. Make sure exhaust is making it out the end of the system and away from vehicle. Don't be driving kids around in exhaust filled car or anyone for that matter. Hope this helps.

Get the exhaust checked, if it is leaking the exhaust gas'es will be coming in the car. most garages can check an exhaust for you.

YOU HAVE AN EXHAUST LEAK ON THE FRONT END OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM.GET THAT FIXED ASAP! THAT IS CARBON MONOXIDE!
