Manual transmission problem

I have a 2000 Ford Mustang 3.8 V6 manual transmission. The transmission intermittently shifts rough. It doesn't really sound like grinding in the gears it's just hard to put into gear and it doesn't do this all the time. I changed the transmission fluid hoping that it would solve the problem but it hasn't. I was wondering if this could be a linkage problem?... The reason I ask this is because it is intermittent and when it's in gear and you can feel it's hard to shift... if you leave it alone for a few mins it frees up and is easy to shift again. I realize that this is most likely the synchrose (sp) but was hoping for some other suggestions. Thanks!

Yours isn't an unusual complaint.

Often folk who complain of bad shifting and suchlike find shifting when stationary and the engine off feels normal, indicating the linkage, selector rods, detents, forks and suchlike are ok and the synchro teeth have not been excessively worn. The sychros can be crudely tested by parking with the engine running and attempting to select each gear without using the clutch. A reasonably healthy synchromesh will prevent a gear being selected while a worn synchro will allow selection with the characteristic machine gun rattle of gear-on-gear.

Very often difficult or rough selection, erratic behaviour while low speed maneuvering and a few other symptoms can be caused by clutch problems or a clutch pilot bearing that is beginning to seize.

Change the fluid in the trans. If that dont work then your throwout is going bad and not disengaging clutch fully.

SOURCE: transmission not leaving first gear

SOunds like the linkage needs adjusting. If it don't catch until it is in first gear, that is why it isn't shifting. Hopefully adjusting the linkage will allow it to catch in drive and then you will shift fine.

Good Luck

SOURCE: I have a 2001 Ford Mustang, v6 3.8 5 speed manual

Hi Bobby, I found this bulletin on I believe the problem you are talking about. Hopes this helps ya put.. Cobra.. Please read..
FORD: 1999-2004 Mustang
ISSUE: Some 1999-2004 Mustang vehicles equipped with a T5, T45 or TR3650 manual transmission, may exhibit a hard to shift condition into first or reverse gears from a stop. This may be due to an incomplete disengagement of the clutch (lack of clutch pedal reserve).
ACTION: Refer to the following Service Procedure. It may be necessary to adjust the clutch pedal down-stop and the clutch pedal shaft nut to gain full pedal travel.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

  1. Lift up on the clutch pedal to reset it.
  2. Measure the clutch reserve per the instructions listed in the Workshop Manual Section 308-00, Diagnosis and Testing, Manual Transmission and Clutch. NOTE: THE MINIMUM RESERVE NEEDED FOR GT, LX AND 1999-2001 COBRA IS 19 MM (3/4").

    1. If the measurement obtained is larger than these values, DO NOT CONTINUE WITH THIS TSB. Follow normal Workshop Manual diagnostics listed in Section 308-03.
    2. If the measurement obtained is less than these values, make sure that the floor mat or excessive material under the carpet is not preventing the pedal from reaching its full travel. Correct any obstruction, if the condition is corrected return the vehicle to the customer. If the condition is not corrected proceed to Step 3.
  3. Visually examine the pedal down-stop to see if it is preventing the pedal from reaching its full travel to the carpet. Correct if necessary by removing the rubber pad on the down-stop. If the condition is corrected return the vehicle to the customer. If the condition is not corrected proceed to Step 4.
  4. Additional travel can be obtained by loosening the clutch pedal shaft nut and adjusting as needed per Section 308-00 of the Workshop Manual. If the condition is corrected return the vehicle to the customer. If the condition is not corrected proceed to Step 5.
  5. If inadequate reserve is still present refer to Workshop Manual Section 308-00 for clutch pressure plate and disc diagnostics

What is wrong with my transmission?

Sounds like you might have a v6 engine. The only solution to this one is to replace the transmission. Google the car there is nothing but problems with the v6 transmissions if left unfixed it will leave u stranded be carefull

My transmission jumps very abruptly when I shift to reverse in my 2003 Ford Escape, V6, 3.0 engine. What is the cause

I usually don't work on the transmissions, but when a Torque converter stays in the lock-up mode I understand that you get rough shifts. The lock-up mode is often advertised as a "gear" but when a Torque converter goes into that mode, there is no slippage and it is considered directly connected to the pumps inside the trans.

This would result in over pressurization of the trans fluid. You might be able to have an external pressure check done in a trans shop. Sometimes the Torque converter has an electric lock-up and they can diagnose this.

Speed odometer quit working and transmission not working properly at times. This is on a Ford Mustang 2001 V6.

Sounds like a vehicle speed sensor..Which is mounted on the transmission..It contros your speedometer plus effects transmission shifting

The clutch is not fully releasing. You can try putting it into some other gear first, then rapidly moving to first gear, but really, you need to either adjust the clutch, or get it repaired.

Runs rough

How long have you had this problem? It could just be a bad tank of gas. Other things to check:
1. fuel pump and filter
Could be running on only 5 cylinders due to
2. spark plugs/wires
3. plugged fuel injector
Any problems with electrical? Like lights dimming at same time as running rough?
4. could be bad alternator putting excessive load on engine.
