You didn't mention the vehicle you are talking about but it sounds as if your brake system has a hydroboost system and if this is the case I would start by checking that,,,

Lose power steering when stepping on brakes

You could have a power steering pump that is starting to fail, or possibly low power steering fluid level. Other than that, brake and steering systems are mutually exclusive.

Brakes had power steering fluid

Power steering should still work fine. I would say there is still air in the line, or it is bypassing inside the master cylinder.

Accidently poured brake fluid into power steering reservoir

You'll need to bleed the system from the steering box, as you would the brake lines, by turning the steering from lock to lock repeatedly. If there's no air in the system there is a good chance its the steering pump causing the problem.

Poured brake fluid in power steering

Hey, If you got brake fluid into the internal workings of the gear,, you may have to have it rebuilt... brake fluid does a number on seals and o-rings...you have at least 4 seals and 3 o-rings...not to mention the 4 teflon rings on the valve body..if all you have is air in the line,.. it will work itself out..I would watch for oil leaks..... watch for the boots (long round black corrugated hard rubber) on each end of the gear filling with oil - they will swell up before they burst/leak.. - if this happens.. you will lose all steering... it will be harder than manual steering... to remove the air faster, just get in a large area and turn from full lock right to left over and over...and over and over.. it will work itself out.. IF there is a leak to the outside (you might be sucking air INTO the system)..and oil will be leaking out..

Jost power steering and power brakes at same time. any ideas

The engine provides power steering through the power steering pump that is runnung when the engine is going and the power brakes are powered by the vacuum generated when the engine is running. To lose both togeather then the engine probably stopped.

What do brakes and power steering have in common on a 2000F550

If you have the hydroboost system..The powersteering pump gives you power assist while you steer..And it also gives you power assist to your brakes..When you have trouble with the power steering pump,,you lose your assist in your steering and your brakes..Youll get a hard brake pedal feel and it will be hard to steer as well
