This year of ranger had a few flaws, In one case, a break power booster was robbing the vacumm, you can test this by plugging it off and seeing the differance, but you will have limited brakes. This model year had a problem with a vacuum leak on the manifold. You can check these in many ways, but please don't use starting fluid. The rear of the manifold usually on the drivers side where it seals to the block.
Also, in 2 other cases a cracked head has gave me the same problem. It is caused from a loss of vacuum.

To set timing on these you have to disable the electronic timing control. The engine emmissions/tune label should explain how to do this.Change the fuel filter and replace injectors , be sure to change fuel tank and pump if a corroded/rusty tank is the reason for the injector plug issue. Just had one in shop that was a couple years newer but sat to long with a nearly empty tank and old fuel and original fuel filter that pluged every injector.Hope this helps some.

try checking the thermostat control senser. it caused my bronco to start for a second and then die. after a while it would finally start and run for a while then die driving down the road. i changed the thermostat control senser and it fixed all problems of dieing

i had a similar problem that ended up being the fuel pump relay located in the engine compartment on the drivers side next to the air box. there will be at least 2 relays, the fuel pump one is black and brown. check that first.
