I have a 2000 540i M package with a door that doesn't open. I took the door panel off and tried to fix the handle as it wouldn't open sometimes. 2 days later the door will not open at all - cable is still attached and I tried with needle nose vise grips to pull the cable. The door locking mechanism looks like it is working but the door acts like it is still locked. Mechanically it is moving up and down - but doesn't open. I can't take the panel off because of the screw that is in the vent opening. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenn
You can try to just replace the cable going from handle to latch assy as it may have streched. If That extra tug opens it. cable may fix your problem But no other adjustments sorry.
hi this iversh again....
The other way is you remove as much of the top
door panel or weather stripping as you can, take a long screw driver
and break the latch to get the door open (yes it is a real pain). The
reason I suggest to car owners to bring it to a BMW specialist is to
minimize the damage. There is no easy way to do it. and with the
actuator bad you can't open it with the Scan tool anyway. Good luck
Do you mean the
actuall silver handel or the whole thing including the black plasic?
Eaither way id take off the little black circle under the handle and
adjust the screw thats in there. The handle has to be aligned just
right or it will cause problems
IF THAT DOESNT SOLVE U LL HAVE TO OPEN THE DOOR PANEL AND INSPECT THE CABLE
Pass the unit through the door slot as you remove the door panel. Look
on the back of the black door handle assembly. NOTICE where the
inch-or-two of cable that leads out from the handle needs to sit inside
a channel on the plastic assembly. THis is where the loose play occurs. Â reinsert it snugly into the channel, and PRESTO.
Note that when you reinstall the door panel, and thread the door handle
assembly through the slot, it will be tighter toward the rear of the
car. Give the entire assembly a good firm tug toward the front of the
car, assuring the cable does not slip out of the assembly. There will
be sufficient play in the cable to do so, and pass it through.
Sometimes it is the latch. IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURS  only when cold.  there is an updated cable
for that concern. You would have to goto the dealer for that cable.
there is a tsb for that cable they will know about it just remember to
explain it with the cold part. But you still may have the latch
problem. Cable is alot cheaper
Are you talking about the inside door handle or the outside? If it's
the inside, there is a screw you need to remove in the "cup" of the
door handle. The plastic handle is attached to a rod with a hook on the
end of it. It's easier if you use a pair of needle nose pliers to hold
the rod while you remove the broken piece. Use the pliers to pull the
rod toward the front of the door. The new handle goes on the same way.
Takes maybe 10 minutes.
THANK YOU
HOPE THIS HELPED

The cable does not stretch. More than likely the door needs adjustment so it engages the striker properly.
A mechanic will know exactly what to do.
Thanks for using FixYa!!
I've had this fun before: can you roll up the window and, reach into the door toward the rear of the car? If you can; you will find the latchbar this needs to be rotated to release the door the cable sometimes snarls the latchplate also there is a locking clip that secures the cam attempt to remove this if the latchbar can not be rotated

I have no idea how to get the door open - I have tried using needle nose vise gripsand pulling on the cable, but does not open.
I don't have the inside door panel off. This coming weekend, I will take off drivers door panel to see what I am looking for and try to do the same for pass door.
I opened up the drivers side door to see if there was a way I could fix the pass door. I decided to send it to a specialist, I will do that this week. Now the drivers door handle is loose - Do I need to replace the cable? I don't understand how a steel cable can stretch like that.
