Disconnect battery ground cable.
Disconnect cable from temperature blend door and the mounting bracket from top of heater assembly.
Disconnect blower motor and resistor electrical connectors.
Disconnect and plug hoses from heater core.

Working under instrument panel, remove 2 nuts on 1980---81 models, or 3 nuts on 1982---87 models, attaching left side of heater assembly and right side of plenum to dash.

On 1980---81 models, remove screw attaching top center of heater assembly to dash. On all models, remove 2 screws attaching right side of heater assembly to dash, then lift heater assembly out of vehicle.

Remove heater housing plate attaching screws, nut and bolt and the plate. On 1980---82 models, remove 3 heater core frame attaching screws and the frame. On all models, slide heater core and seal out of heater assembly.

Reverse procedure to install. Good Luck and hope this helps

What all does heater contoll valve do

The heater control valve restricts hot coolant from flowing thru the heater core when the air cond is running.
Usually if it fails, you have no heat.

1998 mercury grand marquis heater doesnt work only cold air comes out the air cond works fine the enginecoolant is new, the engine doesnt overheat.

Either your heater control valve is not properly operating or your heater core is clogged. Locate the heater control valve under the hood, should be close to firewall on heater hose, have someone adjust temperature from hot to cold and see if you can see the heater control valve operating if so replace the heater core, if its not doing anything replace it(heater control valve).

I recently had my air cond repaired on my ford f150 5.0 but when I dont use it I see smoke coming out the vents its a 1987 pickup.

It sounds like a hole in your heater core, especially if you've been smelling antifreeze. It is located behind the glove box and is relatively inexpensive & easy to replace for the do-it-yourself er.

Heater blowing cold air. like air cond. on. i changed thermostat

If the car is otherwise running fine, then the thermostat is almost never an issue. you need to take a look at the heater core and any heater valve stuck in a heater hose, that is where most of those issues are resolved.

How do i change out heater core on '78 ford p.u w/o air cond

The heater core is located inside the passenger compartment behind the glove box. Remove the glove box liner by removing about 6 screws. Unscrew the heater core cover and you can then see the heater core. Inside the engine compartment you will be able to see where the two hoses connect to the heater core. Disconnect these and with a little wiggling, the heater core will come out.

Heater core replacement

This is a really easy job, disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall, go inside the truck on the passenger side there is a plastic panel/cover over the core, 6 bolts/screws I think, remove the cover pull the core, tops 1 hour, as job at work I did them in 20 minutes.
