First i would check the transmission oil, do this by starting the engine and leave it running, select all the gears (park, Reverse, neutral etc) then put it back to neutral, leave engine running then locate the transmission dipstick in the engine bay, remove and wipe the dipstick, replace then pull out again, if the oil is showing between the cold and hot marks then level is ok. I shoing lower or none, top up the oil level with automatic tansmission oil, keep rechecking the oil level as adding oil as to ensure it is not over full. will need to select all gears again before checking oil level again.
If the oil level is correct than quite likley a Transmission failure will require mechanic.

It could be the linkage from the shifting lever to the tranns. This linkage isn't very expensive to have replaced and your shop can tell you if it is indeed the linkage or not.

Unfortunately the only thing to do in this case is to open the gearbox and see the real status of the cylinders, it's very possible the cylinders do not make contact anymore.
SOURCE: Transmission or Engagement issue?
I had the same problem with my 2006 Forenza - the problem was the transmission range sensor. If you look under the hood, on the drivers side, you'll see your trans. cable connected to a round part that also has an electrical cable coming from it. That is it. Part costs $36.07 at oemsuzukiparts.com (search for Neutral safety switch in the mechanical catalog).

your transmission could be getting weak or the module on the side of the transmission needs replaced

If the shifter is stuck in Park, most likely the shift interlock is malfunctioning. The interlock solenoid,or actuator,is mounted on the shifter, and locks or unlocks the shifter in Park postion based on whether your foot is depressing the brake pedal. The problem could be the brake pedal switch, the interlock solenoid,or the wiring between the two. Also check all your taillight bulbs, third brake light bulbs,or any bulbs involved in the brake lights circuit.I have seen a brake light bulb that was burned out, cause the same symptoms as yours, but it was a different make vehicle.
