After a locksmith repaired the broken steering lock I heard a loud click noise when I turned hard left. I investigated and found the slip ring had turned to far and came out of the white plastic pin that supposed to hold it in place and prevent it from turning with the steering wheel! I repositioned it but it popped out as soon as i turned hard left again?? This does not happen when I turn hard right. Is it possible that the locksmith turned the rings and now it wound to tight? the slip ring appears to turn freely around when the steering wheel is removed! regards dave

Make sure you check your power steering fluid... if it's even low, it will make a terrible noise...run it on empty too long and your can ruin your power steering pump.

when looking at the engine with the hood up, look to the right hand side for something that looks like this (#1 in the pic): http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=ET37&mospid=47720&btnr=32_0957&hg=32&fg=20
it will be black in color, but don't confuse it with the oil filter housing. power steering reservoir will have a unique cap (#2 in the pic) that can be removed with your hand. the one that has the large nut on top is the oil filter. remove the cap and put in the correct fluid.
hope this helped.

Either the power steering pump is going bad, or the rack and pinion is going bad.
