MY 1988 HONDA CRX SI WENT THROUGH SOME WATER AND 5 MINUTES LATER SPUTTERED AND DIED. NOW IT WONT START. I TOOK THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP OFF AND CLEANED AND DRIED IT OUT AND STILL NO LUCK. IT HAS AN MSD IGNITION WITH A NEW CAP AND ROTOR BUTTON, SS COIL AND SPORT COMPACT IGNITION MODULE. STILL WON`T START. PLEASE HELP. I MISS HAULING *** IN MY CAR. IVE ALREADY SPANKED 2 NISSAN 350Z`S WITH IT. LOL!
Get a bottle of 90% anhydous isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol pour it in a spray bottle and, soak the ignition, inside the distributor and all spark plug wire ends spray everything you will not hurt anything wait about an hour for the alcohol to evaporate and, start the car up if the car is flooded spray either into the intake

the firing order for your 91 crx should be 1, 3, 4 and 2. You need to identify where the rotor points to when cylinder 1 is at top dead center.
Cylinder number 1 is the one closest to the accessory belts (alternator, power steering , etc, hope this helps.
All Honda 4 cylinder engines that I have worked on have a firing order of 1342. That is the firing order on your CRX. #1 is the cylinder closest to the timing belt.
Distributors are a common failure item when it comes to Hondas wether it is the coil, the igniter. Replace the distributor assembly if you have already ruled out all other possibilities such as crank sensor, timing belt...
It's called hunting. You need to clean out the EAVC unit in the intake manifold. Take off the air filter and housing, run carb cleaner through the intake for 20 minutes or so.
Next bleed the radiator by taking the rad cap off and start the car, let the fan kick in twice (about 20 mins again) and the air bubbles will have been forced out.
Take the car for a spin and the vote for me when it's fixed :)
take off one of the plug wires and hold it next to a metal surface, get someone to turn the engine over for you and see if the spark is bright blue, if it is the coils are ok, then check for oil leaking around your distributor, if you have an oil around that area take off the distributor cap and see if there is oil inside. the seal may be gone, while you have the cap off it would be a good time to check the rotor button inside
Try disconect the battery from the car. Wait a minute and reconnect. This should reset the computer. This happened
to my moms Honda FR-V. The mechanic had seen it before.
Its worth a try.
You might want to check for any possible vacuum leaks from the back of the intake manifold. A severe enough vacuum leak will cause the engine to spit and sputter. You may also want to check the egr valve stuck in the open position as well. Also caused by possible vacuum issues. Vacuum within the intake will increase with accelaration and if you have a cracked line it could cause the symptoms you are describing.
countrycurt0- The water sprayed up under the hood as i drove over a 3 3 inch deep puddle of water.
Hey Bobby, how deep was the water? Did it come inside the car?
