Faulty back up light switch on the transmission or the wires are shorted to power.

Sounds like the backup switch has shorted out and is feeding power to lights.this switch is part of the selector switch or transmission position switch, which will have to be replaced.you should also check the wiring from the switch to make sure it has not shorted out from the switch to the lights.if you have the car running and disconnect the switch wiring connector and if the lights go out then the switch is the problem.

Could you specify what you mean by "back lights"? Do you mean back up lights, brake lights, lights inside of the car? My first guess would be a faulty switch that should turn off the lights.

SOURCE: 1998 Dodge Durango Turns over but wont start

could be Fuel Injectors, are bad ?
all you need is # 1 Fuel Injector, to go out that will not get Fire, and Fuel Mixture to Spark Plug.

The PCM has 3 connectors plugged into it. Try wiggling each connector and listen for a clicking sound, starting with the connector furthest from the front of the Durango, and the middle connector with a white top.

If this doesn't help, replace your PCM. The PCM (power control module) can get hot, causing a short or broken circuit inside the module. Replacing the module will fix the problem. If your truck dies randomly when it's hot outside, but will start back up after it cools down, this is probably the problem.

My 1998 dodge durango slt wont drive past 40 miles an hour

Hello Jeff Winner,

Over the last 20 years ... cars have has a LIMITED OPERATION FEATURE added... When the engine READS something that is not IMMEDIATELY catastrophic... it will allow you to
LIMP home... rather than a complete shut down.

Limp mode:
You SHOULD also have a CHECK ENGINE light... (?)

My best advice is to limp on down to your near-by FREE code reading shop... and have a READER tell you what CODES are registered...

A blocked exhaust system will also seriously SLOW your progress
((soon to stop all-together)).

Hope this helps

Check you exhaust prices BEFORE you go...!!

What would cause the ABS motor to stay running on a 1998 dodge durango even when the ignition is off?

This is a common problem for the older generation 1 Durango's which were 1998-2003.

The temp fix is to pull the fuse providing power to the unit until it can be replaced.

There are places on Ebay and elsewhere who will swap you a repaired unit for yours and some cash. You could also try a salvage yard.

There is much information on the net about this problem.
