Rod knock upon start

Upon starting my 2004 maxima 3.5 automatic 5spd trans.....theres a loud rod knock then quiets down but is still there upon starting at a stop sign... could this be sludge at timing chain tensioner? or is my best to swap out engine? the car drives fine except that rattle/knock which is real loud at start for a few seconds then is just in the background noise of engine while driving. shifts fine drives good just that rod knock or rattle

Not sure on model but to me sounds like its a dodgey valve lifter when the seals start to go they cannot hold the oil and when there under pressure they basically empty them selves hence when you turn the engine off and restart you get a rattle sound untill the valve fills again as long as the cars running ok leave it untill you have to replace them unless there easy to do sone are sone are a pain

I have the same issue with my 2004 maxima. The service techs said it was the timing chain tensioners .Since they are hydaulic and they powered by the oil in the car .It is recommended to purge the the engine every time the noise starts to come back. I brought some an it really freaking work because I started to run it into a tree and go buy a toyota

SOURCE: my 04 nissan maxima has this loud ticking noise

i have the same problem on a customers car
its only when it sits for like 30 mins
and its coming from the rear head i can't hear it right by the chain cover so it might be
1. too thin of oil
2.oil starvation
3. variable valve timing solenoid sticking and when oil pressure rises it works normal.
4. or chain slap but then id figure the tensioner is bad....
but it goes away so its not a potential.. cuz if it was the noise would be there regardless.
i haven't fixed the car yet im gonna look at it tonite.

SOURCE: 2004 Nissan Maxima Intermittent Transmission Problem?

I don't know exactly how the nissans work with their "limp" mode for what gear it goes into and such. This sounds like the computer is sensing a problem and going into the "limp" mode. Go get the code pulled to see what is says. If it has anything saying trans slipping or ratio problem then something internal in the the trans is wrong. Also, check the trans fluid and see if its burnt ( dark brown or black).

SOURCE: 2004 Nissan Maxima RATTLING NOISE from ENGINE

I have a 2002 maxima with 75k mile and heard a rattling which died down after it warmed up.

It was a bad timing chain pulley. Don't wait too long before fixing that!

I have a 2005 nissan maxima, while i was driving it died on me. Then a loud knocking noise from a rod started, now the car will barely run. How much to fix it?

to machine the crank and get another rod --set of big end and mains-- probably a rebore-- pistons --rings --labour Time off road- It will be cheaper to fit a reconditioned short motor so check around for one from an accredited engine remanufacturer.

Knocking engine

it could be a big end bearing i dont know where the knocking sound is comeing from but if it is your piston and conrod may be comeing loose then by that time u may need a new moter but can be repaird at a less cost u should not be driveing at all

Horrible engine knock in 1995 toyota celica

Check for oil pressure.Check the compression in each cylinder.
Yank the valve cover to see if the camshaft is actually turning during cranking mode, only.
Disable the fuel pump or disable the spark(fuel disable preferred)
The engine may have "eaten" something it shouldn't.
A valve may be broken off inside the cylinder head.
Usually an exhaust valve.

When the car is started, there is a valve knock (sounds like a diesil engine) for about 2 minutes. It quiets down some but it is still there, i was told by the dealer who did nothing that is was low on...

its getting poor circulation of oil through the engine. either bad oil,low oil(which you said its not) or bad filter could be the issue if not it could be worse and needs to go to a mechanic.

Loud instant 2-3 second rattle around the under

Check all braces under your car. Not just visually, put hands on each and every brace. Sounds like one might be loose or broken. Hope it's as easy a fix as mine was.
