Upon starting my 2004 maxima 3.5 automatic 5spd trans.....theres a loud rod knock then quiets down but is still there upon starting at a stop sign... could this be sludge at timing chain tensioner? or is my best to swap out engine? the car drives fine except that rattle/knock which is real loud at start for a few seconds then is just in the background noise of engine while driving. shifts fine drives good just that rod knock or rattle
Not sure on model but to me sounds like its a dodgey valve lifter when the seals start to go they cannot hold the oil and when there under pressure they basically empty them selves hence when you turn the engine off and restart you get a rattle sound untill the valve fills again as long as the cars running ok leave it untill you have to replace them unless there easy to do sone are sone are a pain

I have the same issue with my 2004 maxima. The service techs said it was the timing chain tensioners .Since they are hydaulic and they powered by the oil in the car .It is recommended to purge the the engine every time the noise starts to come back. I brought some an it really freaking work because I started to run it into a tree and go buy a toyota

Ther e is a chance your injectors are leakin g down and there is excess fuel in the cylinders. Not a good thing. So, you fuel pressure and injectors need chkg. good luck

i have the same problem on a customers car
its only when it sits for like 30 mins
and its coming from the rear head i can't hear it right by the chain cover so it might be
1. too thin of oil
2.oil starvation
3. variable valve timing solenoid sticking and when oil pressure rises it works normal.
4. or chain slap but then id figure the tensioner is bad....
but it goes away so its not a potential.. cuz if it was the noise would be there regardless.
i haven't fixed the car yet im gonna look at it tonite.

I don't know exactly how the nissans work with their "limp" mode for what gear it goes into and such. This sounds like the computer is sensing a problem and going into the "limp" mode. Go get the code pulled to see what is says. If it has anything saying trans slipping or ratio problem then something internal in the the trans is wrong. Also, check the trans fluid and see if its burnt ( dark brown or black).

I have a 2002 maxima with 75k mile and heard a rattling which died down after it warmed up.
It was a bad timing chain pulley. Don't wait too long before fixing that!
