What is a cylinder compression how much do it cost to replace it


If you have low (or no) compression in one or more cylinders, it can be due to broken/bent valves or valve seats, bad or broken piston rings, or mechanical timing way off. The cost to correct is very dependent on the specific cause. Best case is mechanical timing is way off (this will show up as low/no compression in all cylinders), assuming no other mechanical damage was done. Worst case is engine rebuild or replacement.

The valve stem seals can be replaced without removing the cylinder head(s) using special tools, so the cost would be be around $600.00 for the V6 engine and about $350.00 for the 4 cylinder engine. Since you don't mention which engine you have I provided both estimates. Keep in mind the parts to do this are the least amount of the cost (about $30), the major cost is labor, labor rates vary wildly from state to state even city to city, so get multiple estimates, Any well trained technican and well equipped repair shop can do this basic repair. If the new seals don't correct the problem which I assume is smoke then the engine has other much more expensive problems like worn piston rings and worn valve stem guides.

MY Truck will not start. Mechanic said it was a timing belt issue. I would like to know what is, in summary, the cost of this. He's trying to charge me a arm and a leg


The timing belt connects the main crank at the bottom of the engine to the camshaft and other bits and bobs at the top of the engine.

The crankshaft lifts and drops the valves in the top of each cylinder to allow fuel in and exhaust out at the correct moment in the engine firing cycle.

If the timing belt fails while the engine is running, the crank keeps turning pushing the pistons up and down while the valves remain still. invariably, the pistons travel up and hit open valves, causing all kinds of cylinder head and valve damage.

The repair usually entails, the removal, rebuild and replacement of the cylinder head. Assuming the cylinder head can be rebuilt. It may be cheaper, taking labour costs into account to replace the whole engine with a second hand/refurb.

No there is no clearance, so you will bend your valves which will cost you much more to replace than a $20 timing belt plus labor.

V.w.jetta gas eng. timing belt broke ? .shut engine off then wood not start . dealer says needs head work ? bent valves? without disasembling is it possible valves never came into contact with pistons ?


Hi, im afraid i can only give you bad news im afraid, if the engine was running even on tick over when the belt snapped then this would have caused the valves to smash into the pistons as the top half of engine would have stopped spinning leaving at least 2 valves in the out position but what causes the damage is the bottom half of the engine, as their is no weight on the cams to keep them turning they stop at once but the bottom half the crank has a big weight called the fly wheel now when the belt snapped the cams would have stopped dead but the crank would have carried on turning under its own weight and this is what causes the piston or pistons to hit the valves this then causes the valves to bend and all the valves will need replacing and the whole top end rebuilding with new seals and the new valves and valve seats will need grinding in.

how ever as its only usually the top half that gets damaged you could save yourself some time and money by calling a local breakers yard and see if they have a cylinder head lying around or even a whole engine as the cost of rebuilding you head and engine would cost more than it would to get a second hand cylinder head or if you didnt want to take any chances look into getting a whole engine.

look at the costs involved get a quote off you garage for the head rebuilt and new valves, tell them worse case if it needed complete head rebuild with all new valves and valve seats and all the seals get a price on the whole job then ask them how much it would cost if you supplied a working cylinder head or even whole engine then compare the prices and check with some breakers for cylinder head prices or engine and you should find that a second hand head will work out cheaper than having yours stripped and rebuilt with new parts.

How much should it cost to replace a bad egr valve for a 2005 chrysler 300c


An EGR valve is simple enough to replace. The part alone costs roughly $90.
It is located at the back of the engine.
If you take a look, there will be a Iron rod going from the back of your intake manifold ... downwards ... its going to the EGR Valve.

Timing belt broke i just readed that when the timing belt break on this car u have to replace the head cylinder coz the valve are bent is this true its 2000 daewoo laganza


True, the engines are low tolerance engines which means that there is no room for the pistons and valves in the cylinder walls at the same time. When the pistons are TDC and the valves are open, they will hit causing damage to the valves and pistons.
Be more cost efficient to replace the whole engine, rather then just the valve train redone. Chances are the the pistons will have some type of damage and it will not just be one piston that will need to be replaced.

a couple bent valves shouldnt be more then a few hundred dollars to have replacedand can be fixed yes, but also the vehicle has to have another timing chain ooput on and be retimed this will probably be a total cost of somewhere in the $800 dollar range (this is only an estimate!!) to replace your entire engine would cost substantially more and in all realit i would try to sell the opother vehicle for parts, trade in, or as a whole and buy another vehicle before i invested the money into a new engine for this particular car
