I had a Gm that would do that.... Came in from a highway run ( 5 hours, 300 miles) with the battery/charging system light coming on, shut it off in front of my house, not enough juice to pop the trunk. My alternator and battery were both new.. Mechanic put a starter on it and no more issues.

Testimonial: "Well I'm thinking my mechanic will probably suggest replacing the starter next. Would a bad starter have anything to do with the battery light coming on and a brand new battery charging low??"
Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.

i would ask the mechanic to check the ignition switch for pitting ....i had this problem with my honda accord for a long time until i finally just switched it for the second time and sanded it down to the point that it would touch but not keep contact to make the pitting .... hope this helped

Before you replace the fuel pump, I would check the cheaiper parts first. Such as fuel filter and injectors.

SOURCE: 1998 Mazda Protoge won't start
One of two things. Starter (or starter solenoid) or Neutral Safety Switch. Check the starter by disconnecting the EFI relay, then jump a wire from the positive term of battery to lug on starter solenoid does it crank okay? If not, then check the NSS, located under the airbox, can be adjusted using the offset bolt, just a tiny bit at a time, still no start? replace the NSS and adjust as necessary.
