Question about 2006 Mazda Tribute

2 Answers

2006 Mazda Tribute won't start. When I first purchased the car the fairly new-looking battery was reading low, so immediately had it replaced. Only to have the new battery weakening/battery light coming on, so replaced the ALTERNATOR. Seemed fine for about a week, then battery light coming on and off again and car not starting on me until I tried about 10 times then would start right up. Had mechanic test the new alternator= it tested fine, but he suggested replacing the transponder key. So for about $65 had the key replaced, once again it drove fine for about a week and I'm thinking problem FINALLY resolved. Then one day running errands around town I got back in and it wouldn't start on the first key turn. The second time it started immediately and I almost thought I had imagined the first time until a couple miles down the road the battery light begins to flash again. Talk about FRUSTRATING. I drove it for about another 2 weeks with this going on, sometimes it wouldn't start at first try but then would eventually start if I kept trying. As of 2 days ago my Mazda Tribute left me stranded at in my school parking lot. I had security come jump me off to no avail, had my mom come pick me up. The SUV will be towed to a mechanic on Monday. Uggh!

Thanks Arnie. That sounds very feasible. I will definitely mention to the mechanic before replacing something else costly, hopeully they can check it for me.

Think u hav a bad cable from the alternator to the batt--they wear and gain resistence eating up alternators--its the red cable used to charge batt--some mechaanics just add anothr wire beside the old and it works--hav a honest guy test the old wire

I had a Gm that would do that.... Came in from a highway run ( 5 hours, 300 miles) with the battery/charging system light coming on, shut it off in front of my house, not enough juice to pop the trunk. My alternator and battery were both new.. Mechanic put a starter on it and no more issues.

Testimonial: "Well I'm thinking my mechanic will probably suggest replacing the starter next. Would a bad starter have anything to do with the battery light coming on and a brand new battery charging low??"

One of two things. Starter (or starter solenoid) or Neutral Safety Switch. Check the starter by disconnecting the EFI relay, then jump a wire from the positive term of battery to lug on starter solenoid does it crank okay? If not, then check the NSS, located under the airbox, can be adjusted using the offset bolt, just a tiny bit at a time, still no start? replace the NSS and adjust as necessary.

Car shut off while driving and won't restart, gauges flicker

If it is a 2006 then you probably need a new battery, which is located under the hood of the car. If the gauges flicker, the battery is probably too dead to start the whole car, but it will still try to start it. Hoped it helped.

Check for voltage at the battery with the engine running. If you have around or more than 14 volts than the alternator is working. If the vehicle starts with a jump and continues to run without starting than the alternator is doing its job. You likely need a new battery. Most auto parts store will check it for free. If the battery is bad replacing it sooner rather than later will be the best choice.

a battery waring ligth is not telling you that the battery is defective, it is telling u that the battery is not being charged by the alternator, have the battery and alternator tested to determine th4e cause, a failing battery many times can damage the alternator as it causes it to overheat, so if the alternator is in need of replacing then it is very important that the battery be fully charged and tedsted prior to installing a new alternator if indeed that is the final diagnosis.
