It could be the linkage. Jiggle the shifter to see if that helps. When it goes in reverse the trans opens other valves to put trans fluid (under pressure) to the reverse unit. If the trans has not had a trans service every 30k or so the fluid could get dirty ans gummey. There are trans additives can claim the desolve the gum. I have donethat before and it has helped my trans. They claim no damage to the trans. - I tried it
