Engine missing and dificult to start sometimes, particularly after short trips
Freelander Petrol 1999 1795cc model.
Will start most of the time on the first turn of the key. other timess it is taking 2 or 3 long turns of key to get engine to fire up.
Engine once running, will drive away with slight missing, and when slowing down at a junction the
engine often sounds like it is begining to miss.
Do you think the coil or HT lead to the coil could be braking down ?
Thanks Dave for comment, sadly just recently had a new head gasket, and about a week or two later this fault developed. Have changed the plugs and current no sign of coolant / oil contamination.

Re: Engine missing and dificult to start sometimes,...
Could be simple thing like a plug, had a sservice recently???
However these engines are very very common for head gasket failure, check fluids, i.e, coolant look for oil contamination, and oil check for water etc, check plugs for wear and corrosion.

The following is instructions for replacing the timing (or camshaft) belt on the 1.8i petrol engine, as fitted to a Freelander. This is the K-series ... With the timing set, thecam sprocket marks should look like this. Posted Image
have had this before with more than one make of vehicle and it often turns out to be the immobilisor _BUT _ check the temeprature sensor first before doing anything as it may not be working so you are trying to start without any choke ,try a starter spray and if fires up first time then at least you know what it is ,as i cannot advise exactly where it is as engine not stated but i do have a handbook for a rover 400 ,yes i know its a car but the engine is the same unless its a american market vehicle with cheap petrol and monster engines thats not in our models
The Idle air speed control of the car is starting to go or the Mass Air Flow sensor is starting to go. I would have the vehicle checked out by your local Mechanic. The HIgh RPM at 3500 on start up is going to cause internal damage to the engine over time. The engine oil can not circulate fast enough on initial start up to all the lubricating parts.
Hi,
Judging by the problem you have a 1.8 petrol engine?,if it is they used to over fuel on start up ,you can try changing the engine coolant temp sensor as this is the usual cause ,if not then some more info on the vehicle would be usefull.
More than likely you are having an engine missfire. They are reknowned for problems with the coil packs that produce the spark for the plugs. They it up the road and labour the engine until it does it on full throttle. then back of the throttle to see if it stops. |Then back on to see if it starts again. Most likely it will. Change the plugs first. this will probably cure it short time as new plugs reduce the load on the coil packs. Best change coil packs though also. Cheers John
