1998 Dodge Caravan has a backfiring problem and poor gas mileage after working on the EVAC system the EVAP system. I get very poor gas mileage.

Question edited for clarity and typos.
Question moved to model category.

Sounds like you have a leak in the system after doing the work, or left a pipe off, or an electrical connector is not seated.

Shouldn't a 2.0 liter engine be getting better gas Mileage than a 2.4 liter engine?

The size of the engine alone will not determine gas mileage. There are many other factors including vehicle weight, design of the motor, etc. So in answer to question 1, size isn't going to matter.

For question #2, make sure you change the oil, oil filter, air filter and keep the tires inflated to recommended specs. That might help you out a bit...

Acura integra using too much gas. Just purchased a used acura integra and it has very poor gas mileage.

Hi GailKol

Is there a yellow light on the dash? Is the car very slow and struggles to rev?

It sounds to me that the ECU (car computer) is in 'limp home' mode. You need to read the ECU's code, usually by the ECU flashing lights, then look at the manual for the reason.

First up, reset the ECu by removing the negative battery lead for 30 minutes or remove the large 75AMP fuse. Run the car and see if the light returns or that it is still consuming too much gas. Then...>

One of the most common reasons for poor gas mileage on Acuras/Hondas is the O2 sensors in the exhaust manifold. These can breakdown instantly and cause rough running and poor gas mileage. There are two on the two exhaust banches. If you change one it is best to change both.

Check the air filter for dirt, clean it or buy a new one.
Take the air filter housing off and run car cleaner through the intake manifold.
Clean the EAVC valve which is in the intake manifold while you are there.
Drive the car and take you hands off the wheel, if it pulls to one side then the brakes are seized (usually rear ones) and needs overhaul/new ones, this will cause very poor gas mileage.

Check the cheap/free stuff mentioned above first. I hope this helps and don't give up on your Acura. You have one of the best driver's cars there of the last 25 years :)....I'm very Honda biased :)

Poor gas milage

Poor gas mileage can have many roots but the best way is always to start with the ignition system. Have a look at the sparkplugs, if you've got the I6 4.0 engine it is easy to check them. Spark plugs are cheap and easy to replace. Also check the spark plug wires, be sure the connections are tight and free from rust. Check the distributor cap and rotor and if they are rusty/greasy clean them up. After you've cleaned and checked the ignition items (spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor) you can move on to the fuel injection system.
Replace the air filter, it is cheap and most people overlook that single item.

When was the last time you replaced the fuel filter? A clogged fuel filter reduces power drastically which in turn affects fuel mileage.

1994 camry 4cyl. was running great. drove it to work and shut it off, then went to start it back up and it shut right off, wont idle. I can keep it running by keeping my foot on gas and its not running...

have your idle control switch check, easy and inexpensive to replace. The idle control switch is what keep the engine stay idle. also have your throttle body clean by a professional having that many miles, it will give you better gas mileage.

My car has poor acceleration and it shakes when stop also smells

Sounds like you're missing on a cylinder or two. Tune it up, first. That might very well fix your problem. Tell the part store guy you need a COMPLETE tune up kit and replace everything that he gives you parts for. Not just plugs and wires, although they would be better than nothing. I'm pretty sure this will fix you up. The symptoms you're describing are classic for a tune up.
