Unfortunately tranny has to be taken out .pretty complicated solenoids deep inside..good luck

there are a number of shift solenoids in a transmission so unless the mechanic was specific as to what ratio is involved , it will be a case of replacing the wrong one
A lot of the time ,harsh shifting is from dirty oil and or oil pressure problems
May be it would be best if you went to an auto transmission specialist shop for a fault code reading and a proper diagnosis

You probably have a problem with

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System
The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components.
• The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid
• The brake switch
• The rear integration module (RIM)
• The transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
With the ignition ON, battery positive voltage is supplied to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid from the ignition 3 relay. The automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid is controlled by the rear integration module. When the rear integration module (RIM) receives a class 2 serial data message from the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) indicating that the shift lever is in the PARK position the rear integration module (RIM) grounds the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This causes the solenoid to energize mechanically locking the shift lever in the PARK position. When the driver presses the brake pedal the rear integration module receives the brake applied signal and turns off the ground to the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit. This allows the shift lever to be moved out of the PARK position.

With a scan tool, observe the brake to shift control parameter in the rear integration module data list.
Press and release the brake pedal several times.
Does the brake to shift control status turn ON and OFF with the brake pedal?

Connect a test lamp between the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid supply voltage circuit and the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid control circuit at the automatic transmission shift lock control solenoid.

With a scan tool, command the brake to shift control ON and OFF several times while observing the test lamp.

The automatic transmission shift lock control system is a safety device that prevents an inadvertent shift out of PARK when the engine is running. The driver must press the brake pedal before moving the shift lever out of the PARK position. The system consists of the following components:

The BCM utilizes a smart driver to control the voltage supplied to the A/T shift lock control solenoid. The smart driver monitors the voltage and current flow of the control circuit.

Where is location of shift solenoid a located on 05 cobalt?


The shift solenoid valves are two identical, electronic exhaust valves that control upshifts and downshifts in all forward gear ranges. These valves are normally open. These shift solenoid valves work together in a combination of ON and OFF sequences in order to control the positions of the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shift valve trains. The TCM monitors numerous inputs to determine the appropriate solenoid state combination and transmission gear for the vehicle operating conditions.
Remove the transmission side cover. Refer to Control Valve Body Cover Replacement . Remove the 1-2 shift solenoid retainer clip (304), the 1-2 shift solenoid (305) with O-ring (303), the 1-2 shift valve (302), and the 1-2 shift valve spring (301).
Remove the PNP switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement . Remove the transmission upper side cover bolts. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information. Remove the left front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels. Remove the left inner fender liner. Refer to Front Fender Liner Replacement in Body Front End. Remove the wheel drive shaft from the transmission. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement in Wheel Drive Shafts. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering. Remove the frame. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.

Hello your transmission is going to have to be removed and assets from your truck the best solution is have transmission specialist heck it this is a big job a hoist is greatly needed to perform this work perhaps trans mission rebuild or replace.

My automatic ford focus is stuck in park and the boot kept popping open on it's own at the beginning of this week.


Are you referring to a transmission shift solenoid, or the shifter lockout solenoid? The shift solenoids, that control the shifting of the transmission, are located internally in the trans, specifically in the valve body. The shifter lockout solenoid, which is the solenoid that prevents you from shifting out of park, without depressing the brake pedal, is located in the shifter assembly itself, below the center console.
The transmission solenoids are located just inside the fluid pan. Here is some info for replacing them. It is acually pretty easy.
The first time this issue happened (at 60k miles) I paid a '''transmission shop $600 to fix it. It just happened again (at 100k miles) and I fixed it myself for about $50. It's a fairly common problem, so I'm posting the symptoms, codes and instructions here to help others.

I own a 2002 '''Ford '''Focus with automatic '''transmission. The symptoms are that the '''transmission disengages (slips out of gear) when it goes into 3rd gear. When the car slows down to 20 miles an hour or so (or when you stop) it re-engages. You can drive the car in 1st or 2nd gear generally. The '''transmission light comes on. There are no noises associated with this problem. If you have this problem then it's probably the "A" '''Solenoid that needs to be replaced. Here's how you make sure that's the case and fix it for $50.

1. You need to pull the diagnostic computer codes. '''Ford will pull them for you for $100. But, you can do it for free by going to AutoZone. They have a loaner computer diagnostic code puller. If you bring the car they'll just do it for you in the parking lot. If you want to borrow the tool then they will want a $200 security deposit. I recommend that you bring the car to them if you it's close. Also, there are lots of small shops that will pull the code for you for free. There's no reason to pay a "diagnostic fee" to pull the computer repair code. This code will tell you Exactly which '''solenoid to replace. It's typically the "A" '''solenoid, though.

2. Once you get the code you need to know which '''solenoid to replace. Here is a list of diagnostic '''solenoid codes:

P0750 SSA SSA '''solenoid circuit failure SSA circuit failed to provide voltage drop across '''solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during on-board diagnostic. No reverse gear (short) or no fourth gear (open). Refer to Pinpoint Test A.
P0751 SSA SSA functional failure Mechanical or hydraulic failure of the shift '''solenoid. Not all gears present. REFER to Diagnosis By Symptom (307-01 , DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING).
