My 2006 BMW X5 3.0i needed a battery boost. I think in the process of giving it one I shorted the electronics and now my dash doesn't work properly -- the rpm gauge doesn't work; the fuel gauge doesn't work; and many of the other lights and indicators don't work. I can also make out some writing that is coming up on the dash display and it looks like the language has been reset to German. Do you know what's wrong and do you think they're is any reason to get the fix done at a dealership as opposed to a reputable car repair shop.

have the engine wire harness checked maybe a communication problem between modules.

There may be no loss of voltage, but is there a surge of voltage?

As for the battery itself when tested, it should read 12-12.5Volts across the
leads when the car is off. When the car is running, the battery should be reading 13-14Volts across the leads, anything lower means the alternator is not charging your battery, anything higher means the alternator is over charging and damaging your battery.

Another cause for the battery light could be your ECU has detected an error

You have some wiring problems shorting out that is coming from the dash board so if you or anyone you know how to use a multimeter to check the wireing harnesses plus check any connectors that might be just very touching the connector of dashboard which means a bad connection to dashboard.
