Bmw 323 'r' reg e36 engine oil light flashing

I have replaced the oil and oil filter because oil was black and thick and the oil light is still coming on intermittently still. the engine appears to be running fine. the light does not come on immediately but after approx 8 miles. could this be the oil pressure switch?

Your oil pressure switch is a great place to start. since the oil was really thick you could have a horrible oil sludge problem. about 50-100 miles before your next oil change take a bottle of Transmission Fluid and dump in with your oil. and Drive for the remaning 50-100 miles with the Trany fluid still in the oil. The Transmission Fluid is a great Cleaner for sludge.
hope this helped you

Regular service and replacing oil and filter is neccasary for long engine life. Dirty oil gets sludge like and blocked some of the lubrication channels. The light indicate either too little oil or probable low oil pressure perhaps in your case. Very dangerous, Dirty oil sludge block the oil pump and prohibited oil reaching the top. If the light comes on have it checked out and keep checking oil levels.

I've blown an engine due to a oil pump that was blocked by slugde oil.Rather spend the money on regural service and save a lot of money and hassles with a fualty engine.

start with the common things. You will be surprised with how clogged air filters can alter the peformance of your vehicle. I would start by checking air filters. when was the last time you serviced your e36? you might also need to check fuel pump pressure.

Engine cuts out

BMW CUTS OUT
A few things to check.
  1. Is fuel pump delivering enough fuel.
  2. Is injectors clean. Perhaps dirt in fuel. replace fuel filter
  3. Air leakage at top air intake of manifold at ICV idle control valve. Two hoses inside this housing prone to perishing.
  4. Throttle position sensor faulty.
  5. Mass air flow sensor faulty.
  6. ICV faulty or dirty. comon fault on older e36.
Havent done it yet but ICV is easy to clean according to internet. instruction available at bmw e36 blog. All off above can be tested by yourself according to manual.

Location of oil filter on BMW 323i coupe '99 reg and how to fit new cartridge

Both E36 and E46 models have oil filter under the hood, towards the front of the block. You will need a special socket to remove the oil filter cap and once it's out, can replace the filter. Make sure to replace the gasket on oil filter cap, it should come in oil filter kit you bought.

Oil Change

Nice and easy, drop the oil from the bottom of the sump, pull the oil check stick, remove filter in the black cylindrical housing at the front of the engine it has a massive hexagon shape on the top which simply unscrews with the right tool, to reveal the filter, replace the sump bolt using a new copper washer, replace filter and put oil in whilst checking dipstick as you go.Good luck.Davelee
