Retract rear caliper piston

There are three ways to retract the rear calipers. One is a scan tool which will perform this specific task. The other two ways require a caliper piston retraction tool to be used while spinning the shaft located behind the electric motor. one way is to very carefully supply 12 volt power and ground to the electric motor, one way will extend the piston. Short momentary increments is best if this is your first time. If this sounds overwhelming then please don't try it. Unless you are confident that you can do it. You may end up shorting the terminals or damage the caliper. The other way is to remove the electric motor from the caliper. It is very easy just remember the clock position for reassembly. After removing the motor use a T40 Torx socket and spin the shaft clockwise. After spinning the shaft a little, retract the piston a little. It depends what type of Caliper Piston it is, if it has two grooves in it that criss cross like a X, those pistons have to be turned clockwise with a special tool or you can use a small screwdriver or I use the complete side of a small Vise grip that will fit inside the groove to turn the piston clockwise until it fully retracts into the caliper. The other type of Piston that has no special marks, you can use a C-Clamp and just put it on the Piston and tighten the clamp until the Piston fully retracts back into the caliper.

As your car has a handbrake fitted to the rear calipers,you will need a piston wind in tool to retract the piston fully back into the caliper as when you adjust your handbrake the piston automatically winds itself to the required position for usage without this tool you are getting nowhere,so get hold of a tool to do the job and you should not have problem unless the piston has totally siezed on the screw then you will have a problem being the only way to repair would to be a new or refurbished caliper.

The rear brakes on the 2004 need to be compressed with a special tool available at any parts store. You need to "screw" the caliper piston in instead of pushing it in with the "C" clamp.

Notice the Two holes on the caliper piston face? They receive the pins of a special tool that turns and presses in at the same time to collapse the piston. You may be able to approximate the effect with a pair of needle nose pliers or such and turn & press in. The right tool works best.

A big pair of channel locks will collaspe the caliper but it does take some muscle or you can release the brake line nut and releave the pressure but then you would have to bleed the brakes.

you must spread the pads out....do this with a wedge-shaped tool and use lever action to push the caliper pistons back to the fully-retracted positions in the cylinders. The pistons are currently in the position where the last pads had allowed them to extend to. It is good practice to (excercise) the pistons at pad change time by moving the pistons back and forth slowly to remove any oxidation at the cylinder walls, but never allow pistons to fully extend...prevent this by using a piece of wood to act as the thickness of one rotor and 2 pads. You extend the pistons by using the car's brake pedal, then retract them with the wedge.

actually theres a special tool that connects to an air pump hose that expands the caliper back but you can use a vise if your very careful with pressing it back or locking clamp that you can use like a vise but this requires hand presure loosen bleed screw then use the vise
