93 Grand Caravan right rear wheel/brake problem(s)

I've owned the van for about 1.5 years.

Problem #1: When it's cold out, sometimes when hitting the brakes (no matter how lightly), the right rear brake slams on with full force. This doesn't happen during the summer. The frequency of this happening has increased over the time I've owned the van.

which may be related to

Problem #2: At higher speeds (50+ mph), there is sometimes a scraping noise coming from the right rear wheel. It comes and goes. There will be no weird sounds and then I enter a curve and the scraping is there. The volume of the scraping varies. The scraping noise may or may not go away when I exit the curve.

I had the wheels looked at 3 months ago due to some tire noise, and the wheel bearings were loose. I had them tightened and the tire noise has become normal.

It was indeed the wheel bearing. The dust cap had come off, and the bearing had been fused to the brake drum somehow. The mechanics spent 20 minutes trying to separate them but were unsuccessful. Hopefully this will also fix the braking problem - thanks for your insight!

Well i can help with problem #2

even if you tightened the wheel bearing, it is probably worn out..

what it does when it's loose is you won't hear much noise when you drive on a strait road but the minute you put some weight on it, like when you take a curve, the weight of the body is applied on the bearing resulting in a scraping noise....

and the faster you'll drive the more noise you'll get

so let's say you take a left turn you're gonna hear noise from the right wheel...

Van will not back up or drive forward. Seems like the back end is locked up. Van started and shifted into gear, but would not move.

If you can feel the thump of the engine when you select gear I would say the trans is working, most likely I would say that your emergency brakes are locked, your rear shoes are binding with the drum. 2 causes, a frayed cable may not be allowing you to release the the brakes, or the springs are soft in the rear brake area and not releasing. Jack up the rear put in neutral, emergency lever off, see if wheel can turn by hand, if not, remove wheel hit brake drum with rubber mallet to see if this releases the shoes off the drum. Inspect emergency brake cable first to see that there is little tension holding it. let me know how you go. cheers.

If you were lucky you could go in through the back of drum and back off the shoes. Lift up lever with screwdriver and use other screwdriver to back off star wheel

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan

The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

Thud Thud Thud noise from centre rear back undercarriage of my 2005 dodge grand caravan. Can this be the rear differential? Veh only has 80000 kms.

Your Caravan has no rear differential. The van is a front wheel drive, you may have a bad brake or your spare tire under the back of the van is lose. the other thing to look for in the back is the rear shocks could be broken or lose. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help get your van running 100% again soon.

The rear wheels have been braked.

Why are they locked up, did someone push emergency brake, or has van been sitting for along time, or maybe a few days after a rain? Tried pulling ahead first?

Rear wheel

does the van shake or vibrate? does the van have tires on it ?start by switching the left rear with the right rear test drive and listen for soun if no sound then the tire has a bad steel belt replace tire if the sound is still present. jack up van and spin tire if no sound is heard replace wheel bearing and if there is still a sound look into brake drum for possible springs or clips that may have fallen into drum causing noise but i would say its more than likely the rear wheel bearing to change that u must buy a new bearing and follow instructions on replacing good
