I started my car this morning and I noticed the check engine light was on...no big deal well then I put my foot on the brakes to put the car in nutreul to leave but the shift wouldnt move. It acted like it was stuck. I turned it off and then back on and the same thing. I checked the transmission fluid, and it was fine. Whats wrong and what can I do to fix it??? Please help.
Sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.
Please rate as fixed if this helps.
Fuse 23 - 1 5 amp
Fuse 34 - 7 1/2 amp
check enigne light not related.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.
Move the selector lever out of position "P".
NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.
Selector Lever Lock
do not worry about the check engine light. It just means you are not passing emissions right now. Not a big deal. Only big if the light is flashing.
Check the 2 fuses I told you to check first. Your owner manual will tell you where the fuse panel is and a layout of the fuse chart. It probably is about where your left knee is when you are sitting in the car.
Also check fuse #30, 7 1/2 amp fuse.

IF you don't have the owners manual here are the steps that I took to get my 1996 Cougar out of Park..
1) Take the key out of the ignition
2) Set the parking break
3) Put key back into the ignition and turn clockwise to the first position.
4) Press the brake pedal down and try now to move gear from Park to Neutral.
It took me a couple of tries..but it worked and saved a towing bill.

I am a woman...and no nothing about cars. But I was wondering about what to ask an estimate for. My husband is going to look at it when he gets home...it just happened this morning. Somone told me that I might be able to turn the key half way and put the car in nutruel and then start it all the way and shift again. I am moving Sat. So I need a quick fix soon. If I do fix it, will it continue messing up?
