1999 Mercury Sable with 75000 miles on it; car runs great. Only had it a short time. After a long highway run car would not restart until it sat for about one and a half hours. Then it started right up and ran perfectly. When I was trying to restart it; during that time, the engine seemed to be running on only one or two cylinders and the RPM would not raise above a few hundred.
Fuel pump in tank is failing.
Does it happen when below a 1/4 tank of fuel.
parked up hill slope?
I still think fuel pump is going. A pressure check of the fuel presssure would tell you. It should be around 40 psi.
It never mattered how much fuel I had in the tank on my '95. It only ever happened when the outside temp was above 80 degrees or so (keep in mind I live in Texas) I tested the pump on the sending unit in the tank and it worked fine. Is there a fuel pump on the motor as well that might be going out?

No, the car was on the level with about a half tank of gas.
Changed the fuel filter...it was dirty. Don't know if it solved the problem or not.
I had a similar issue with my '95 sable. Only when it's hot outside I can drive for 50 miles or better nonstop, but the moment I idle for more than 5 minutes it idles rough like not firing on all cylinders and have to let it set for a couple hours (longest time was about 4 hours) I was replacing the in-line fuel filter almost once every other month or so. This time I dropped the tank had it cleaned out and replaced sending unit in tank. Car ran perfect after that. Once it set over night The motor turns but it wont start now. I pulled the codes and got 54, 25, 42 - the only thing they all have in common is the ECM - Any Ideas?
