I had same issue on my 99 a6 and it ended up being two different things. I had a bad wheel bearing and also my rear brakes where going bad and grinding so I changed al that and I also had bad boot on my front axle and just ended up changing the whole axle just to be safe. I would check these things I listed. If the axle is bad it will click when turning but I have seen them go bad and not click and give a rumbling sound like when wheel bearings go bad and it will do this in a straight line or turning. Hope this helps ya

I had a grinding and whining noise, and it turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. Had to have it replaced, and just in time. The shop took over an hour just to get the worn bearing out. Bad or faulty wheel bearings can make a grinding or a whining or whirring sound that mimics the sound of worn brakes.

This may sound obvious, but I would have your brakes checked out, just to rule them out. Many shops will do a free brake inspection.
If the noise is coming from the engine, look for a "Check Engine" light. If you see that, then have someone hook up a scanner to check the codes thrown by the car's computer and go from there.
A grinding noise is not something you want to put off or wait to fix.

Engine wines in 5th gear, not speed related as slowed down to 30 and still wining

It is very likely a bearing noise in the transmission main shaft bearing, the best thing to do here is have a tech at a transmission shop test drive the car and give you a preliminary diagnosis as to what the problem might be. Most shops do this for free in hopes of getting the repair job. I suggest you get more than one opinion on this
