My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the rear door will not open...one day I had trouble closing the door...it seemed like it would not latch so we shut the door pretty hard and now the door will not open. Also, how can I tell if the child safety door latch is not latched?
I need some help before I wreck the door!!!!
Thanks, Kris
I bought my Cherokee new and until 06 I never had a problem with the doors. When 1 latch went all the others went shortly thereafter. You WILL HAVE to replace the latches. I've done all 4 doors and the rear latch. You can do it relatively easy but the latch NEEDS to be replaced. You may get it to work every now and then, but it will FAIL again, just replace it and you'll be happy.
If the door won't open from either the inside or outside than there is a problem with the latch assembly or alignment. You can use the other rear door to see how the child lock works. Meanwhile, you'll have to remove the door panel on the right rear door from inside the vehicle. Then you can reach inside with a screwdriver and flashlight and work the latch free. Once you get it open you can further diagnose if it is alignment or a faulty latch assembly. It's not going to be easy getting the door panel off from inside or working the latch to release. I hope this helps.
