There is no RPM singal when cranking why?

If your looking at the dash, Most gauges don't move till the engine is running. If your looking at a scanner and no RPM's. Most likely it is the crank sensor. Could be the wiring/plug. Worse case is the PCM died.

Our 1999 Buick century is having problems with running it won't hardly take gas and the transmission won't shift up sometimes the same time the transmission messed up the speedometer quit working

Is the check engine light on ? Have checked for codes , may have transmission codes stored . Check engine light doesn't need to be on for codes to be stored . VSS - vehicle speed sensor is a input to PCM.
The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a gear-driven permanent magnet generator housed in the transaxle. The sensor generates a sine wave output with a frequency proportional to the vehicle speed. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) converts the signal to an output that switches to ground at a frequency of 4000 pulses per mile. The signal (CKT 817) is used by various vehicle components. The signal CKT 817 drives the following components:
• The speedometer
• The odometer May also have problems with mass air flow sensor , crankshaft position sensor , cam sensor etc...
DTC P0336 Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor Circuit
The 24X reference signal is used to improve idle spark control at low engine speeds. The PCM uses the 24X reference signal to calculate engine RPM and crankshaft position at engine speeds below 1600 RPM. The PCM constantly monitors the number of pulses on the 24X reference circuit and compares the number of 24X reference pulses to the number of 3X reference pulses and CAM signal pulses being received. If the PCM receives an incorrect number of pulses on the 24X reference circuit, DTC P0336 will set and the PCM will use the 3X reference signal circuit for fuel and ignition control. The engine will continue to start and run using the 3X reference and CAM signals only.
There are a lot of electronic thing's on you Buick that can go haywire causing the problems you have . If you are unfamiliar with these thing's I mentioned , I suggest you take it to a ASE certified repair shop . Some people get irate just mentioning this, It mite save you money in the long run .

Have a 94 toyota camry , check engine light comes on when stop at light or car sits at idle. got codes 12 , 22, am very confused !!

Code 12. RPM signal.
Problem area: Loose connection, broken rpm signal wire from distributor to ecm to rpm meter, rpm meter, distributor assembly or ecm defective.
Code 22. Water temperature signal.
Problem area: Loose connection at water temperature sensor connector, broken wire between the sensor and the ecm, defective sensor or ecm.

DTC P0336 - Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance


The crankshaft position sensor (CKP) is usually a two wire sensor: a signal and a ground. The CKP sensor consists of (usually) a permanent magnent sensor that is mounted in front of a reluctor (toothed) wheel mounted to the crankshaft. As the reluctor wheel passes in front of the crank sensor, an A/C signal is produced that varies according to engine speed. The PCM (powertrain control module) uses this A/C signal to interpret engine RPM. Some crank sensors are hall-effect sensors instead of permanent magnent sensors. These are three wire sensors, provided with voltage, ground, and signal. They too have a reluctor wheel with vanes and "windows" that change the voltage signal to the PCM, providing a RPM signal. I will focus on the former, since they are simpler design and more common.



The crankshaft reluctor has a specific number of teeth and the PCM can determine the position of the crankshaft using only this sensor's signature pattern. The PCM uses this sensor to also determine cylinder misfires by measuring the reluctor teeth locations in the CKP sensor signal. In conjunction with the Camshaft position sensor (CMP) the PCM can determine timing of spark and fuel injection. If the PCM senses a loss of CKP sensor signal (RPM signal) even momentarily, P0336 may set.


Symptoms of a P0336 DTC may include:
Intermittent stalling & no start
No start
MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Intermittent misfire


Potential causes of a P0336 code include:
Bad crank sensor
Broken reluctor ring (missing teeth, debris lodged in ring)
Reluctor ring dislodged/stripped from it's stationary location
Wiring harness chafing causing short
Wiring open in CKP circuit


Possible Solutions: Crankshaft sensor problems are at times intermittent and the vehicle may start and run for some time until problem occurs. Try to reproduce the complaint. When engine stalls or if the engine will not start and continue to run, then crank engine while observing RPM reading. If there is no RPM reading, check for a signal coming out of the crank sensor. Using a scope is best, but since most DIYers don't have access to one you may be able to use a code reader or the tachometer to check for RPM signal.


Visually check the CKP harness for damage or cracking in the wiring insulation. Repair as necessary. Make sure the wiring isn't mis-routed near high voltage spark plug wires. Check for loose connection or broken lock at the sensor connector. Repair as necessary. Obtain a resistance spec for the Crank sensor. Remove and check it. If it doesn't pass, replace it. If it checks out okay, check the reluctor ring for damage, broken teeth, or debris lodged in the ring. Make sure the reluctor ring isn't dislodged. It should be stationary on the crankshaft. Carefully repair/replace as necessary. Note: some reluctor rings are located in the bell housing of the transmission or behind the front engine cover and cannot be easily accessed.


If the vehicle intermittently stalls and after stalling you have no RPM signal and you have verified the wiring to the CKP sensor is good, then try replacing the sensor. If that doesn't take care of it, and you can't access the reluctor ring, seek help from an automotive professional.

I recieved Code 12 from diagnosis

For 83-86 Camry, 87 corolla, 84-87 pickups and 4-runner: Code 12 = knock sensor or circuit (distributor or circuit on Cressida, Supra, and Celica 3S-GE)

87-90 Camry, all other models 88-90: Code 12 = Rpm signal/no NE or G signal to ECU within several seconds after engine is cranked.

All models from 1991 on: Code 12 = Rpm signal No "Ne" signal to the ECM within several seconds after the engine is cranked. No "G" signal to the ECM two times in Succession when engine speed is between 500 rpm and 4000 rpm.

16501/P0117 - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62): Signal too Low Possible Symptoms
  • Difficulties with starting a cold engine.
  • Starting the engine when engine is warmish or warm, idle rpm immediately is 1200 - 3000 rpm.
  • RPM at idle is irregular.
  • With all engine temperatures seldom idle rpm will vary between 900 - 1000 rpm.
  • With engine warm (90 °C) the engine temperature suddenly drops (70 °C) and slowly comes back to 90 °C.
  • Bad acceleration during warming up.
    • Diesel: an indication is extreme long time burning time of the glow indication light.
Possible Causes
  • The electrical signal coming from G62 is too low
  • Wiring and/or connections faulty (short circuit?)
  • Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62) faulty
Possible Solutions
  • Check wiring and connections
  • Check / Replace Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62)
Special Notes
  • In MY 1995-2002 (?) in Europe at VW-cars the G2/G62 had the bad reputation of breaking down often. The default G2/G62 is black and all replacements are green.

P0321 Spark Reference Circuit. The spark reference signal is used by the PCM to improve ignition timing accuracy during crank and at engine speeds of up to 1,200 RPM. The spark reference circuit allows the use of ignition control mode below 400 RPM, eliminating the need to utilize module mode during start-up, and also allows the PCM to calculate true crankshaft position in 1/6 the time that use of the fuel control reference signal would permit. During normal operation, the PCM uses the spark reference signal to control ignition timing until the engine speed exceeds 1200 RPM, at which time the fuel control reference signal is used. There is no connection to the TCS.
If everything checks ok then the PCM is defective PCM.
